Jennifer Lopez made Grammy history the year she wore the green leaf chiffon sheer Versace gown that looked like it would wall off her. And she’s not coasting on her fashion laurels. The wore a short silver dress with a long piece of large white chainmail by Donatella Versace over it to the Grammys last night – and while it’s clear she hit some major right-now trends: silver with white, short with long, unusual fabrications – this dress is definitely sexy – but almost a little – well, WEIRD. We notice that Rihanna and Beyonce’ wear outrageous looks and very soft makeup, to keep it young and fresh. Jennifer Lopez could have left half that eyemakeup home – it looks so nineties. She’s trying just a tad too hard here.

As every true watcher of Golden Globe fashion observed this Sunday, peachy pale pink was one of the major colors for gowns by the most fashionable women – blue and purple were the other two. We predicted color, so we feel a bit arrogant right now – and ladies went for color, despite the pouring L.A. rain and cold. It’s not like they knew how bad the weather would be when those choices were made – or there would have been matching umbrellas! This nude pink is probably THE biggest color for spring 2010, and it’s interesting to see how various stylists and celebs went fashion forward, instead of going with the NOW (black, dark green, red).
Our favorite pale pink was Emily Blunt’s mermaid shaped but chiffon ruffled Dolce & Gabbana gown. Emily usually wears black, and it lit up her whole face and skintone to wear this peachy pink shade, and even with simple hair, makeup and jewelry, she stood out. The dress fit her perfectly. We also REALLY loved Maggie Gyllenhaal’s more orangey RM gown by Roland Mouret. Maggie has never looked better or been more glamourous. She always looks chic and funky, but she rarely looks sexy – and this time, she did. The dress was really fitted, had a lot of origami detail, and with her hair up, she was breathtaking. Roland Mouret is an amazing choice and he makes very body conscious clothes. We have a feeling Maggie probably took up pilates in the last few months to wear that dress. It was worth it. Nicole Kidman’s peach silk Nina Ricci hasn’t gotten that much press, but when we looked at it again, we decided it was just so Parisienne and beautiful. It was a tiny bit flowey with ruffles and slightly loose, so it looked very Alberta Ferretti or Commes des Garcons – a bit more avant garde than Nicole’s usual, but then Nicole’s ALWAYS made interesting fashion choices. We love the dress. Drew Barrymore’s Aterlier Versace is a gorgeous color for her – but we’ve already talked about how the crystal detail at the hip of the dress isn’t flattering. Everything else about it is. Diane Kruger’s gradient pink Christian LaCroix haute couture gown is more pink than peach, but we LOVE all its detail and ruching and rosettes. Now THAT’S a gown. We’re amazed it hasn’t gotten more press – it’s a stunner and it really stood out. And Christina Aguilera’s peach Versace with metallic is a nice combo of sweet and sexy, and with her new bob, she looks very young and girlish and soft – it’s a lovely new look for her movie debut. If Mariah can do movies, why not Christina?
In conclusion, peachy pink is THE spring color, so start stocking up on pieces now – it’s a better color for a blouse or dress than a skirt. Marni’s new peach ruffle blouse is one of the best spring pieces we’ve seen for an LA wardrobe picker upper.

The big winners at the Emmy’s – the big fashion winners, at any case – were Versace, Marchesa and L’Wren Scott. Of course, Versace is a juggernaut, and complete veterans when it comes to dressing celebs on the red carpet. Marchesa has Harvey Weinstein behind them, as his wife is designer Georgian Chapman. But L’Wren Scott? An American based in Paris and London, it’s kind of fabulous that she managed to dress both Kyra Sedgwick and Christina Hendricks. Her clothes aren’t even in that many stores.
Here’s the Versace line up – Jane Krakowski in a fall 2009 gown, Blake Lively in a fall 2009 gown – and then there’s January Jones. Her gown cannot be found on the fall 2009 line up of the Versace show- nor the resort 2010 lineup. That means this dress is either from the upcoming spring 2010 show at the end of this week in Milan – or it’s couture and was made just for her!!!!!!! Either way, January has JUICE to get the hardest-to-get dress of the night!

Let’s face it, there were a lot of great gowns at the Emmy’s last night – Olivia Wilde in Marchesa, Kyra Segwick in red Versace. It’s hard to say that anyone looked particularly wrong or bad – even Drew Barrymore, in a frothy Monique L’hullier – really got it together. We are trying to find something bad to say about SOMEONE, but so far – we can’t. Quelle disappointment! But you cannot dispute the amazing just total CHIC of January Jones in the corseted strapless Versace gown. It’s in that icy cool pale shade of the night – in this case, a very pale green, that you can only really spot in the lines of the deco corsetry of the peplum top. The design of the bodice looks like some Viennese art deco from the age of Klimt or Shiele. And it’s also so simple. January was so smart to wear no necklace, one tiny bracelet, and small earrings – and even light makeup and a simple chignon. She let the dress so the talking – and talk it does. It speaks CHIC. International language that it is.

If you take the media’s word for it, Blake Lively and Leighton Meester are the best dressed girls in the world – look at all their fashion magazine covers. But, when you analyze it, how great have their looks really been on the red carpet? On “Gossip Girl,” they do look pretty spectacular – but that’s daytime New York rich girl fashion, and that’s hard to beat. Lively’s worn clothes to major awards shows that didn’t fit right, with wildly messy hair. But finally, last night at the Emmy’s, where she and Meester were presenters together, Blake Lively got it right. Her red Versace was the hottest of all the hot red dresses at the Nokia Theater. Red was the color of the night – and the one color you wear when you REALLY want attention – but with its plunging neckline and knotted waist that barely kept the whole dress together – it looked like it could come apart in a stiff wind – she was the glamourous sexy starlet you want her to be. And of course, it was by Versace – the same Milanese folk who brought us JLo’s green leaf print barely-held-together dress at the Grammys that made her a star a decade ago. Lively was smart to slick her hair back and wear in the style of a Grecian goddess, and not in that messy tousled bedhead way she’s gone to awards shows before. She worked her body and that dress, and she let them do the heavy lifting. It looked clean, modern, sexy and strong. Perhaps Donatella got in there with her stylist and took control. Whatever happened, we’re glad it did.
However, Leighton Meester went way far overboard in her styling. We love the white Bottega Veneta dress she wore – with its Grecian style knots at the shoulders and open work back detail. White’s a nervy color to wear at an awards show. We know it adds poundage, and the light bounces off it. It looks good on brunettes, true – but Leighton had messy wavy hair which kept bashing into the shoulder detail of the dress – and the bright red lips belonged with another outfit and another hairstyle. Red lips – great. Tousled hair partially up – great. White Bottega gown – great. BUT NOT ALL TOGETHER. These strong details each deserved its own awards show. Leighton was example of trying way too hard. And standing next to Blake in her simple sexy chic, she looked like a wedding cake with too many tiers and a cherry on top.

The Paris spring 2010 couture shows are just around the corner – starting on Monday July 6th and ending Wedneday July 8th, 2009. We have a feeling less Hollywood stylists will be attending than usual this summer season, given the economy. But here at Fashionrules.com, we’ll be keeping a close eye on the gowns and clothes from couture that are relevant to a Hollywood red carpet. We doubt too many of these couture looks from Chanel, Dior or Valentino will end up at the Emmys (Sept 20, the next major red carpet) – but that all depends on WHO is going to the Emmys. (If it’s Sarah Jessica Parker or Drew Barrymore, a couture gown COULD show up. Particularly an Armani or a Versace or an Elie Saab).
But in the meantime, here’s what we know, for you internet fashion voyeurs:
Monday July 6 – two shows by Christian Dior Tuesday July 7 – LaCroix, Givenchy, Chanel Wednesday July 8 – Elie Saab, Jean Paul Gaultier, Valentino
Maison Martin Margiela will also do a special presentation on July 7 and 8th – is this couture? Or ready to wear?.

All the press contacts are here, too. What we’re curious about it – there is NO mention of a Versace couture show on this official French calendar. Hmmm . . .
The big news at Valentino is that longtime Valentino pr man, and jewelry designer and NY man about town Carlos Souza, who left 18 months ago when Valentino retired, is back in the hot seat of vp of U.S. pr. Souza – one of the most social and well connected pr gents in the biz – has the job of getting the U.S. press and celebrities to go to the couture show on July 8th. Having dressed many a major star in Val for the Oscars (Gwyneth, Julia, Halle, Reese), if anybody can get famous butts in those Parisian chairs, it’s him! Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli are creative directors of the line now, but the last couture show – without master Valentino Garavani – was not well reviewed. But celebrities in the front row is almost as good as good reviews.
Okay, here at FR, we aren’t going to go on at giant length on the all the looks of the models and the celebs at the Met Ball in NYC – it’s a New York-centric event. But we do think it’s interesting to go over the trends and how they might affect real life and what this do to trends in evening looks overall. Here’s what we noted:

MINI’S AT NIGHT ARE HOT: Gwyneth started this trend, and now it’s everyone – mini for black tie events. Anne Hathaway did a Marc Jacobs purple poufy mini, and while she was ever so slightly Minnie Mouse with her big hair, it got looks – and was cute and young. Kate Moss also did a short metallic Marc Jacobs with an assymetrical cape, Jessica Alba did a blue crystal short dress, January Jones did a gold Michael Kors long sleeved mini, and Giselle wore a very tiny blue Versace dress in crystals that made everyone else nearly irrelevant. And of course, Madonna’s LV mini and headdress made a statement – and not necessarily a good one. What does all this shortness mean? If you want to turn heads at a dressy event – and you have great legs – AND you’re under 50 – or even 40 – go for a colorful or metallic mini. And have good legs.

COLOR IS THE STATEMENT: No one who wore a black dress – and there weren’t many women who did – got that much attention, except for Rihanna in a Dolce & Gabbana sleek tux (the boy look is always a grabber.) Jessica Biel’s orange long tiered Versace gown was vibrant, so was Kate Hudson’ s backless Stella McCartney gold dress – a bit of a body-conscious cliche, but pretty. We also loved Marion Cottilard in her pale peach Dior , and Cindy Crawford and Blake Lively both wore bright Versace blue. As did Donatella – at least you never forgot whose dresses were hers. However, neither Cindy nor Blake look like their dresses fit them well. Sample sizes aren’t always flattering on real bodies.

BIG BIG DRESSES: Heidi Klum stole the night in her deep blue strapless J. Mendel dress, that needed a whole city block to walk on. This woman knows how to grab the eye. Elizabeth Hurley’s ecru Elie Saab confection and Kate Beckinsale’s giant Marchesa also were impossible to avoid. Jessica Biel’s orange Versace was pretty big, too. So that’s another option – if you’re going to wear a gown, were a gown with a LOT of fabric!!

One great economic indicator for us fashion types is how many in-store shopping “parties” are being held these days – with requisite champagne and bites – and discounts, of course, It’s all about getting the warm bodies in the stores – with their credit cards, of course. Versace does not normally do shopping events, but they’ve engaged the services of L.A. based society pr man Patrick Herning to hold one for them on April 15th – tax day! – at the Beverly Hills boutique at 248 North Rodeo (and Wilshire). From 7:30PM to 9:30PM that night, there will be a “VIP discount on selected items” – hmmmmm – we’re not quite sure what that means. But what we DO know is that Donatella Versace’s spring 09 collection is all on the short and chic side, in colors of solid black, solid white, and a buttercup yellow. Also on hand will be superstar race car drivers Dario Franchitti (husband of Ashley Judd – perhaps Ms. Judd will turn up too), and Ian Daly, on behalf of Lamborghini, who are launching an accessory collection with Versace. And even if you’re not shopping, it’s always fun to see a collection close up.

Everybody’s weighing in on Oscar fashion – even those highly well-dressed women on “The View” (if you didn’t denote a note of sarcasm in print, we’re letting you know – that’s sarcastic!). Consensus has it that Marisa Tomei’s Versace couture had too much fabric and pleating (that’s what designer Randolph Duke said on KABC last night), that Miley Cyrus was dressed far too old, that Kate Winslet looked amazing in her YSL chicness, that Penelope Cruz (in vintage Balmain) and Sarah Jessica Parker (in Dior couture) stole the night – this is what Fashion Rules has to say, since we certainly have our own opinion:
MAJOR HITS
-
Penelope Cruz in her vintage Balmain – the Oscar winner switched it up from black to white, and while her miles of latte-like froth did look a little bridal – it was still a stunner, with her Audrey style hair.
-
SJP in Dior Couture – miles and miles of seafoam tulle – if only she’d run down the streets of Manhattan in it now!
-
Natalie Portman in Rodarte fuscia – a strapless close fitting body skimming princess gown. She took our breath away – and definitely had the best makeup of the night. Or maybe it’s just the best face.
-
Kate Winslet in YSL two tone steel gray and black lace – a fabulous combo, a new style look for the red carpet, a great label, and a great fit. Lots of controversy about that molded hair – we loved it. It’s SO new.
-
Taraji P. Henson in white strapless tiered Roberto Cavalli with a major Harry Winston diamond necklace – she looked classy AND like she was having fun – a rare combo. And it fit her beautifully.
-
Freida Pinto in John Galliano one sleeved electric blue lace. It looked Indian and Parisian at the same time, and made her look more impossibly gorgeous than she is. And that’s hard.
-
Angelina Jolie in Elie Saab Couture. The dress was all about her body – as well it should be. Those green honking Lorraine Schwartz earrings and ring were amazing on her – and a whole different way to go for Oscar jewels.
-
Nicole Kidman in L’Wren Scott feathered white gown – fabulous. She wore her longtime stylist’s designer – very loyal, and it looked great. Why didn’t anyone care, though?
MINOR HITS
-
Amy Adams in red Carolina Herrera with a Fred Leighton collar necklace. Redheads in red, it’s an old topic. Essentially, it was a risk – and while the dress fit perfectly, we wish it was green – or blue – red on a red carpet just screams. The necklace was gorgeous, flattered her eyes – but stole the dress’s thunder, and didn’t really work with the color red.
-
Viola Davis in an accordian pleat gold deco gown by Reem Acra – very pretty, very appropriate. Very flattering on her.
-
Evan Rachel Wood in pale Elie Saab couture – very pretty, and less Goth than usual.
-
Marisa Tomei in pale silver Versace major pleated gown with train – okay, so it was a whole LOTTA dress, and the train was high maintenance. It was quite a stunner and a major high fashion dress. Marisa has emerged this awards season as a real fashion risk taker. We applaud her, and loved it.
-
Diane Lane in a black Dolce & Gabbana corset gown. It’s impossible for this woman to look bad.
-
Anne Hathaway in white sparkly Armani Prive – okay, we liked the pailettes, even if it weighed two tons, and she always looks pretty – loved the clean hair and red lips. But she looked uncomfortable and weighed down, and we think she could have done better. And she has done better – the Globes dress was MUCH better.
-
Tilda Swinton – she toned it down in a blouse and skirt ensemble that was chic, and we like evening separates. Her red lips looked great with it. She’s an Oscar avant gardist, and we love her bravery.
-
Tina Fey – she didn’t wear BLACK!!! She wore silver!! She looked HOT!! And cool! In Zac Posen – what a cool NY girl should wear.
-
Halle Berry in black strapless and gold Marchesa – pretty.
-
Beyonce in a mermaid black and gold House of Dereon design, probably her own. Very sexy.
MAJOR MISSES
-
Heidi Klum in the red thigh-high slit giant collared Roland Mouret: sorry, Heidi – but a fashion professional gets judged even more harshly. You wore a red dress like this to the Oscars before. Come ON, the whole idea is to look different. We love Roland Mouret, but this one looked like something out of “The Jetsons” – and the high slit was more becoming to the Grammy’s. Do you really need that much attention? They better get “Project Runway” back on the air, pronto!
-
Vanessa Hudgens in an encrusted Marchesa fishtail black and white gown – too much texture on too tiny a girl. Her hair and makeup were pretty, though.
-
Sophia Loren – okay, so she’s an icon, and she’s nearly eighty. She was wearing a child’s dress in an adult size – and a deep fake tan in a yellow dress – please, let’s leave that to Donatella.
-
Miley Cyrus – You’ve dressed like you’re 12. Now you dressed like you’re 40. What about 16? That dress by Zuhair Muhrad looked like it might have worked at the Oscars in 1958.
-
Goldie Hawn – Does it matter who designed that beige nightgown? Her tan boobs were falling out, and it was just – embarrassing. Has she ever heard the word “class” – ?
MINOR MISSES
-
Reese Witherspoon’s two tone black and blue Rodarte was fashion forward, but overwhelming on her – she’s too tiny for all that dress. Also, her hair and makeup just flopped. Stylists Claire and Nina Hallworth just don’t do her justice.
-
Jessica Biel – the bow front white Prada was a cool move, a very fashion move – but it obscured her amazing figure. Maybe women liked this dress – but men wanted that big bow GONE. Interesting choice, though.
-
Meryl Streep – the dress actually wasn’t that bad. She’s done worse. Now that hair . . . . .
-
Alicia Keys – that lavender Armani Prive gown was great. The hair was WAY too big, and so were those earrings!!!!!
-
Jennifer Aniston in silver Valentino strapless – again, she didn’t wear black – that’s major for her. However, leaving her hair down and undone, and wearing an old-school style gown – she looked like she doesn’t care about fashion. And she doesn’t.
