Valentino on the carpet

The New York Times online just revealed that fifteen feature-length documentaries, the so-called “short list,” have qualified as possible Oscar nominees, from a field of 89 films that were eligible for consideration. The short list, announced Wednesday by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, were chosen by a screening committee from the documentary branch of the academy. The full branch will now vote for the five Oscar nominees from that list. The list includes films by such major names as Agnes Varda, and the only fashion film named in the category is “Valentino: The Last Emperor.” (“The September Issue” did NOT make this list.) So we are getting closer to designer Valentino Garavani actually attending the Oscars as a nominee! The man has attended years when he dressed the likes of Sophia Loren, but this could be a total fashion first!

Valentino
You have probably seen “Valentino: The Last Emperor” – and if you haven’t, shame, shame. It’s one of the best movies of the year and sure to get an Oscar nomination in early 2010. In the meantime, the DVD and Blu-Ray editions are coming out on September 8th, and you can pre-order it on Facebook. Of course, those who’ve seen probably want to own it as well, and it has 46 minutes of bonus material, including three mini-features covering the unique world of haute coutre and unmatched highlife of Valentino and Giancarlo Giammetti. Anna Wintour Vogue

2009 will go down as the year of the great fashion documentaries that were released in movie theaters. The first was undoubtedly “Valentino: The Last Emperor.” “The September Issue,” the doc about the making of the September issue of Vogue – usually a doozy of an issue, but probably not in this recessionary year – which played at Sundance – will open in late August/early September, and it will give us all a peek at the inscrutable Anna Wintour. (Most people just assume she’s the same as the character in “The Devil Wears Prada,” but this doc will have the last word.) There will be parties for the doc in NY on August 19th and in the Hamptons on August 22, and we’re sure Vogue this helps our their sales and advertising, which is down like it is at every magazine. And no doubt, Elle Magazine can’t wait for the return of “Project Runway” on August 20th to help their sales. Isn’t it funny the Vogue parties are right when “Project Runway” is returning? – Merle Ginsberg

valentino opens in more theatresWe’ve been writing a lot about the great fashion doc “Valentino: The Last Emperor” – and with good reason. It might be the single best fashion documentary of all time. People have been comparing it lately to “Unzipped,” the great nineties doc with Isaac Mizrahi – but Valentino is a master designer, couturier, and he’s the most elegant and exotic subject. The movie was only meant to have a ten day run at the Laemmle Sunset Five at Crescent Heights and Sunset – but five weeks later, the movie’s still going strong, packing in the audiences! Now it’s expanding all over the U.S. – but in Southern California, it will open tomorrow, Friday May 16th, at the Crest in Westwood – one of the great old theaters of L.A. – and at the Laemmle Playhouse 7 in Pasadena, and the Muvico Thousand Oaks 14 in Thousand Oaks. Okay, so “Angels and Demons” is opening this weekend – it will probably be sold out, so go see “Valentino” instead. Even non-fashion audiences are loving it – and we’re even hearing buzz on a possible documentary Oscar nomination. – MG

valentino the last emperor movie poster

NOW HEAR THIS: WE ARE TOOTING OUR OWN HORN!
Rather than sneak up on you with this, we decided to broadcast it – here at FR, we aren’t sneakily self-promoting. If we’re gonna self-promote, we’re gonna blast it!!
If you haven’t seen the doc, “Valentino: The Last Emperor” – it is being held over at the Laemmle Sunset Five Theater, Crescent Heights and Sunset, and has had a wildly successful run – it’s gorgeous to look at,
warm and sweet, and hilariously funny. At a huge Valentino retrospective in Rome before the master retired,
Karl Lagerfeld whispered to Valentino Garavani, “Outside of us, everyone makes rags!”
In any case, we are VERY proud that Fashionrules.com is quoted in a huge way on the movie’s poster, declaring the movie the best fashion movie since “Sex and the City!” We are up there with New York Magazine and The New York Times.
You heard it here first – Fashionrules rules!!! – MG
