There was a disparity in thinking this week that the Oscar presenters might be kept secret till Sunday night – but the truth is, the Academy website has mentioned some presenters on their website – but not all. We know of two women whose names have NOT been announced. But meanwhile, these names have: Queen Latifah, Tina Fey, Miley Cyrus, Kristen Stewart, Barbra Streisand are the women we know of; and the men are: Robert Downey Jr., Zac Efron, Taylor Lautner, Jake Gyllenhaal, Jason Bateman, Ben Still, Ryan Reynolds, Sam Worthington, Keanu Reeves, Steve Carrell – with Sasha Baran Cohen cancelling on a skit he was meant to do with Robert Downey Jr. about James Cameron. Somebody thought better of James Cameron’s temper, and Baran Cohen is out. Meanwhile, the biggest fashion presence of the night will no doubt be TOM FORD, who directed “A Single Man,” and helped earn Colin Firth an Oscar nomination. Who could outglam Tom Ford? He’ll be the best looking, best dressed, most exciting presence at the Oscars! And Tina Fey and Oprah will be the most powerful – isn’t that irony??

It’s a big deal to make the cover of Vogue – it’s that “you know you’ve made it, even in the fashion world” moment. EVEN for TIna Fey, whose done the cover of Vanity Fair and other mags. But Vogue is the big mama of female prowess and achievement in America – and March Vogue makes it a bigger deal. September and March are the two biggest selling issues of the year, with the most amount of clothes and ads and readers. March is literally “the power issue.” In a candid conversation with journalist Jonathan Van Meter, Fey describes herself as a celebrity flying the flag for “normal.” However, as Anna Wintour notes in her editor’s letter, “there is nothing ordinary about her brilliance, her perceptiveness, or her beauty. Mario Testino and Tonne Goodman’s portfolio of the star captures a woman who fully understands the power of style to elevate the everyday.”

Highlights from the Article

Going Rogue: Ever since her devastatingly funny Sarah Palin impressions, she has for the first time in her life attracted unwanted attention—and hate mail. “People started projecting politics onto me,” she says. “There are people who hate me now because of that.”

Normal Girls: “I feel like I represent normalcy in some way. What are your choices today in entertainment? People either represent youth, power, or sexuality. And then there’s me, carrying normalcy.” Pause. “Me and Rachel Ray.”

The Skinny: “People will say, ‘Oh, fashion magazines are so bad, they’re giving girls a negative message’—but we’re also the fattest country in the world, so it’s not like we’re all looking at fashion magazines and not eating. Maybe it just starts a shame cycle: I’m never going to look like that model, so… Chicken McNuggets it is! And conversely, I don’t look at models who are crazy skinny and think I want to look like that, because a lot of them are gigantic, with giant hands and giant feet.”

The Power of Clothes: “I think women dress for other women to let them know what their deal is. Because if women were only dressing for men, there would be nothing but Victoria’s Secret. There would be no Dior.”

Hand-Me-Downs: When she was in grade school, a cousin gave her some hand-me-downs that included a “colonial-lady” Halloween costume. “It consisted of a bonnet,” says Fey, “and a burlap apron and a long skirt. And I would just wear it sometimes after school. As an outfit… It was the Bicentennial! People were excited!”

The VOGUE Cover: “I was posing for [Mario Testino] and he was talking from behind the camera and he was like, ‘You have to fliiiirt, darleeeng. You have to bee-leeve you are wuuuurthy to on the cover’ And then at one point he said very quietly, ‘Lift your chin, darling. You are not eighteen.’ And I was like, ‘You probably say that to all the 23-year olds.’”

We have to say, even before we knew that Tina Fey’s interesting black and green and grey striped tea-length full skirted dress was by Zac Posen, we thought Ms. Tina was the most improved fashion presence at the Golden Globes this year. For one thing, she wasn’t wearing her perennial dour black dress. She had red lipstick on. She showed her nice shoulders. She looked very girlish and much more comfortable than she usually does on the red carpet. Funny, then, that it was the first year she didn’t win the Globe for best actress in a tv comedy in a few years. And she even said that on the red carpet on Sunday night. “I think our winning streak is over,” she told us – she’s rarely wrong. But let’s see what happens at the Screen Actor’s Guild Awards this Saturday night. Jessica Lange was also wearing a Zac Posen gown, although she didn’t fare quite as well, in our opinion. The second most improved fashion presence at the Golden Globes was Meryl Streep. We’re not quite sure what that simple off the shoulder black dress was, but it fit her well, flattered her shoulders, and she looks amazing in red lipstick – like ten years younger. Wow. She actually made an effort. She clearly had an idea she might win.

Tina in HB
It’s so weird NOT to see a woman who’s all hair and lipstick and a skinny waist on the cover. Having worked at Harper’s Bazaar for a span of about four years (2003 to 2007), I know that the magazine is very keyed to newsstand sales – and that editor in chief Glenda Bailey loves putting stars like Drew Barrymore, Jennifer Lopez and Lindsay Lohan on the cover – beauties with big box office track records, who are big on designer clothes, and love love love their hair and makeup. Most Bazaar covers have model actresses with big hair, big teeth, and even big cleavage – that’s what sells the most issues. Somehow, they made Tina over in their own image, to a certain expect – and she looks very glam on the inside, too, wearing designer names, as they never does on her tv show “30 Rock” – nor did she dress up much for “Saturday Night Live.” BUT – there’s still the realism, she doesn’t look like she’s pushing her boobs out, or going for the sexy come-hither look. That wouldn’t be true to Tina Fey. But her Emmy appearances have gotten a bit more glamourous over the years, and those Vanity Fair covers have cast her as “sexy funny,” even though Liz Lemon on “30 Rock” is a total accident-prone geek smart-girl type. This cover is good timing for Tina Fey’s career, though – Fey has “30 Rock” premiering this week on Thursday night. She recently finished shooting “Date Night” with Steve Carell, and seems the consummate workaholic mom: inside Bazaar, she admits she wishes she had time for yoga but doesn’t (LOVE that realism!), that she fears botox and doesn’t want to look “shiny shiny,” that she works too hard and feels tense a lot, and that neurotic singleton Liz Lemon is very much based on her, and that she’s sort of afraid to wear color. “When it comes to going to the Emmys,” she says, “People always say, ‘You should wear some color,’ but I always wear gunmetal or black.”

We love the new realistic glamour girl – a hardworking woman who lets her smarts and cool overtake her style – and that a magazine that celebrates young girls who do nothing but shop and wear clothes – put an icon of realism on the cover. Let’s hope it sells. Everyone go out and buy it so we get more smart women on the cover of magazines, who are over 30! – Merle Ginsberg

Emmys 2009

Gucci dressed three celebrities at the Emmy’s last night – and they were all VERY good ones. We haven’t seen this much Gucci action at a major awards show red carpet in a long time – but the fall collection is very very good. We loved Tina Fey’s one of a kind long black silk gown with green and crystal jeweled brooch and her sequin evening shoes. (Her clutch was by VBH.) Her hair was looking very chic, as well. Sure, Tina always wears a black dress to an awards show – after all, she’s a brainy New York chick. But the more money and fame she gets, the better the hair and the black dress become! She’s finally getting the hang of this glamour thing. But smartly, she does not let it overwhelm her personality.
Jon Hamm from “Mad Men” – who did NOT win the Emmy for best actor in a drama – that honor went to “Breaking Bad’s” Bryan Cranston – did win best dressed man, however, in his Gucci fall/winter New Manhattan one-button peak lapel tux with white straight evening collor shirt, his black satin bow tie and his black satin lace up shoes. The show “Mad Men” won best drama, though – and Jon Hamm wins best looking man at the Emmy’s, hands down.
His girlfriend Jennifer Westfeldt, who’s starring in a show on Broadway right now, wore a very lovely one-of-a-kind seafoam crepe gown with pleated detailing and sequin evening shows. Pretty color.
By the way, “one of a kind” is the equivalent of saying “this is someone we really want to dress.” No doubt, Jon has a “dress me, dress my girlfriend” clause. And it works.

stylists start your engines

The Emmy Nominations were announced in the a.m. of Thursday July 16th, and the big big BIGGIES were “30 Rock” (22 nominations for NBC), “Grey Gardens” (17 nominations for HBO), “Mad Men” (16 nominations for AMC), and “Saturday Night Live” (13 noms for NBC).

So from this and other individual noms, here are the HOT WOMEN that major designers are going to want to dress this year. We have a feeling a lot of stylists sprang into action today, since the Emmy’s are September 20th, and everyone will want to be off in August, and NY Fashion Week is Sept 9 to Sept 18. So if stylists want to go to NY fashion week, they will have to have their options ready before NY Fashion Week – and NY designers can put spring 2010 looks onto Emmy nominees, but they better make them in different colors and fabrics, so these looks won’t have to compete between Wireimage photos – and fashion magazines wanting to run them!

The top woman to dress for the Emmys: TINA FEY!!! Not only did “30 Rock” and Tina herself get top nods – she got nominated as a guest star for her Sarah Pallin on SNL!!! Also, dressing “Mad Men” costumer JANEY BRYANT would be a great idea for a fashion designer – she’s beautiful, and she’s going to win for Best Costumes.

After Tina, there’s JANUARY JONES and ELISABETH MOSS from “Mad Men”, and CHRISTINA HENDRICKS from the show. Jon Hamm’s girlfriend Jennifer Westfeldt would be a hot girl to dress, as well, as he’ll get a ton fo attention. (She’s also doing gueststar bits on “24.”)

Both DREW BARRYMORE and JESSICA LANGE will get a lot of attention for “Grey Gardens” – and let’s hope this is a good Drew year, and not a bad Drew year, in terms of hair and dress. She’s been known to get it TERRIBLY wrong!

After that, Mary Louise Parker for “Weeds,” Glenn Close for “Damages,” Rose Byrne for “Damages,” Mariska Hargitay for “SVU,” Holly Hunter for “Saving Grace,” Shirley MacLaine as Coco Chanel, and Amy Poehler and Kristin Wiig for “Saturday Night Live” will be the ladies to watch. HEIDI KLUM and PADMA LAKSHMI were also nominated as hosts for reality shows (Heidi for “Project Runway,” Padma for “Top Chef,”) and these are New York fashion girls at their finest – we vote for these two to be the best dressed women at the Emmys!

Stylists – start your engines!

Tina Fey

There are even more awards shows than you could EVER dream of – we know the Tony’s are this Sunday night (June 7, with Neil Patrich Harris hosting), and that the Emmy’s were just moved from September 20th to September 13th – and that the Emmy nominations will happen on July 16th, signaling to stylists the moment to spring into play to find gowns that will work in September (probably from fall or the recently shown resort 2009/2010 collections).
But today – June 5th – America’s top television critics made their opinions known for the Television Critics Association Awards, which will be handed out in Pasadena on August 1rst. We don’t know yet where they’ll be broadcast, but you can be sure they will be. The big winner was a show that’s not coming back: FX’s “The Shield,” with Michael Chiklis, ended its seven season run in November, and got 11 nominations. The other nominated dramas are “Lost,” “Mad Men,” – they will go up against “Saturday Night Live” and “Battlestar Galactic” for Program of the Year, along with “The Shield.” The nominated comedies are “30 Rock,” “Big Bang Theory,” “The Daily Show,” “How I Met Your Mother,” and “The Office.” Notice there’s an absence of “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Desperate Housewives” here. But Tina Fey’s stylist should jump into action!!!!
This show might have a little less glamour than many awards shows, but it should have more credibility.

This is the eighth year that InStyle Magazine and the Diamond Information Group teamed up to host a Red Carpet Golden Globe Diamond lunch – where they showed amazing diamond necklaces, earrings, bracelets and rings during a runway show with models wearing Globe-worthy gowns by Vera Wang, Zac Posen, Oscar de la Renta, Carolina Herrera, Giorgio Armani, Donna Karan and more. Hal Rubenstein, the fashion director of InStyle Magazine, narrated the show with his usual cryptic and insightful commentary about why we need glitz NOW: “Because it’s time to have fun again, after such a dreadful year,” he preached. “And everyone wants to see Hollywood stars be glamourous and chic – it’s a great escape.” Elizabeth Stewart styled the show with drop dead gowns and great shoes by Jimmy Choo, Louboutin and Sergio Rossi, and the models walked well coming down stairs in their six and seven inchers. Diamonds can be very heavy – particularly if you have four strands on!

In the crowd were jewelers Lorraine Schwartz, Martin Katz, Neil Lane and representatives from H Stern, stylists Tanya Gill, Jen Rade, George Kotsiopolous and Vincent Boucher, retailer Cameron Silver, InStyle Editor in Chief Charla Lawhon, InStyle new Managing Editor Ariel Foxman, and reps from Armani, Judith Leiber bags and more. Actresses Taraji P. Hensen wore an orange print Rachel Roy dress, Freida Pinto wore a black chiffon dotted Azzaro; Maria Bello donned a slim fitting Todd Lynn turquoise sheath – and admitted she recently got engaged to boyfriend tk. Miss Golden Globe Rumer Willis wore a chic vintage tan chiffon pleated dress that every stylist craved. Olivia Wilde from “House’ wore the day’s best dress: a very pale blue and tan Jason Wu cocktail dress, also in chiffon – very ballerina. And Debra Messing, in a green Donna Karan and diamond earrings, admitted she didn’t think she’s going to win the Globe she’s nominated for on Sunday night as Best Actress in a Comedy Series, “The Starter Wife. “I’ve been nominated many times for ‘Will and Grace,’ she laughed. “But I was up against Sarah Jessica Parker. I thought when ‘Sex and the City’ went off the air, I’d have a chance. Then it was Jennifer Aniston’s last year on ‘Friends.’ Now I’m up against America’s sweetheart, Tina Fey!! I can’t seem to catch a break!”

Well – she still looked great – and always does.

Well, it’s exciting to know the Golden Globes will go on as planned this year, on January 11, 2009 – since they were pre-empted last year by the WGA Strike. We’ll get to see  everyone from film – drama and comedy, and television – drama and comedy – and made for tv network and cable films. And that’s a LOT of ladies going down the carpet all on the same night.

This is who we can expect to see in some amazing fashion creation that night, who the great designers like Armani, Versace, Dior, Chanel, Valentino, Lanvin, Givenchy, Zac Posen and Dolce & Gabbana will be pursuing to dress: Anne Hathaway (nominated for Best Actress in a Drama for “Rachel Getting Married”),  Angelina Jolie (Best Actress, “The Changeling”), Kate Winslet (Best Actress in a Drama for “Revolutionary Road” and Best Supporting Actress for “The Reader”), Robin Wright Penn (who we assume will be accompanying her husband Sean Penn, nominated for Best Actor in a Drama for “Milk”), Rebecca Hall (nominated for Best Actress for a Comedy, “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” – interesting because her co-star Scarlett Johanssen did NOT), Sally Hawkins for Best Actress for “Happy Go Lucky”), and Amy Adams (“Doubt”), Penelope Cruz (“Vicky Cristina Barcelona”), Marisa Tomei (“The Wrestler”) and Kate Winslet again, for Best Supporting Actress.

In the tv area, January Jones (“Mad Men”), Anna Pacquin (“True Blood”), Kyra Sedgwick (“The Closer”) and Mariska Hargitay (“SVU”) were nominated for drama; Tina Fey (“30 Rock”), Christina Applegate (“Samantha Who”), Debra Messing (“The Starter Wife”), America Ferrera (“Ugly Betty”) and Mary-Louise Parker for “Weeds” for comedy, and for tv movies, Laura Linney (“John Adams”), Catherine Keener (“An American Crime”) and Susan Sarandon (“Bernard and Doris”) are in the lead category, and Rachel Griffiths (“Btothers and Sisters”), Laura Dern (“Recount”) and Melissa George (“In Treatment”) were nominated for over all Best Supporting Actress in tv.

Scandolously missing from the nominee list: Cate Blanchett for “Benjamin Button” and Scarlett Johanssen for “Vicky Christina Barcelona.” But then again, you can’t get nominated every year.

This is NOT the full nominee list: Meryl Streep, Judi Dench, Shirley MacLaine, Sally Field, etc were all nominated for Globes: but the Fashion Rules list is the list designers will be using to see which actresses will make their gowns look good and help them with their branding. And it’s no secret anymore that many of these fashion houses will pay nominees to wear their clothes, jewelry, even shoes and bags.

The big fashion machine is already gearing up. For instance, NY reps for JP Tod’s are heading to LA the first week of January to show stylists new clutch bags specific to the Golden Globes, and new Roger Vivier shoes from spring that will be available. Let the games begin!!
