Milan fashion week for fall just wrapped up, but Fashion Rules has decided to go back and show you the highlights of the some of the shows that weren’t the most glam or trendy or press-highlighted.
We always love Burberry Prorsum, because Brit designer Christopher Bailey always does amazing leathers and suedes, his outerwear is dead chic – and the fall collection was filled with fabulous trenches and coats. His spring 09 collection filled with lurex, brocade and metallics in classic English shapes is a total standout – the fall collection is a little quieter and more classic. But there are pretty little cocktail dresses, great jackets and coats – and Burberry worked completely against the eighties tight tough trend all over New York and Milan – and just went with its quiet British boho story. And you know what? It’s a nice story – very comforting, relaxed and pleasing.
OVERWHELMING TRENDS: Leather oversized trenchcoats paired with thin chiffon dresses, dropwaist Bohemian dresses in pale colors with dark soft slouchy coats or jackets, a black full chiffon skirt with a white shirt, shearling jackets paired on top of over the knee chiffon dresses, a very long beige grey v-neck cable sweater on top of a tweed over the knee skirt, jersey dresses knotted at the waist, long tweed kilts, tweed cropped trousers, metallic long sleeved dresses – and a chic group of dresses that are practical and pretty at the same time
COLORS: Mouse grey/beige, white, black, khaki, black and white tweed, silver metallic, plum, a gold floral brocade on dresses
FABRICS: Leather, suede, chiffon dresses, shearling, jersey, fur – giant oversized fur coats, silver satin, lurex, wool
BEAUTY TRENDS: Soft straight hair parted in the center, pale pink lips, light coral eyeshadow
ACCESSORIES: Low black suede lace up boots, black opaque tights, giant satchel doctor bags with short hard handles, detachable oversized collar scarves, black fedora hats with larger brims
RELEVANCE TO HOLLYWOOD: You don’t see enough L.A. girls sporting Burberry, unless it’s their handbags – probably because they think these clothes aren’t sexy and tight enough. However, the super long sweaters would look very L.A. paired with leggings, the dresses could be worn to any premier or cocktail party, and the slim pants are really flattering. Let’s face it, these are clothes for grown ups – but women like Meryl Streep, Helen Mirren and Susan Sarandon would look so chic in these long sleeved metallic or jersey dresses, with tight waists. They’re the right amount of demure, grown up – and trend conscious. If Sienna Miller and Kate Moss can wear these clothes, why not them?

Not that many designers mix clothes and food. But English designer Nicole Farhi has always done that in New York – when she opened her uptown boutique years ago right near Barneys on Madison and 61rst Street, she put a restaurant in the shop. That store is since closed, but even more interesting is 202, Farhi’s more eclectic boutique downton on Ninth Avenue between 15th St. and 16th next to Chelsea Market. It sells hippie style cozy clothes for men and women, homewares, glasses, candles – very South of France – and serves great brunch and lunch, including French press teas and killer French toast. On Sunday morning of fashion week, we spotted Susan Sarandon, her daugher Eva Murri, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, and Gerard Butler on a casting meeting – none of them acknowledging the other – and in typical New York fashion, no one made a big deal out of any of them, and there were no papparazzi anywhere. And yes, people were shopping for clothes. (And fyi, Farhi’s husband is the great playwright and screenwriter David Hare, who penned the script for the Oscar nominated “The Reader”.) – Merle Ginsberg

Yes, we know all you can think about are the two big O’s: the Oscars, and the Obamas. But save some time this Sunday for the 15th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, which is a fairly different affair than the Golden Globes or the Critics Choice Awards. It’s much more focused on the thespian aspect of acting, and there’s only one party afterwards, hosted by People Magazine – so it’s a bit less festive, particularly in light of the fact that the Screen Actors Guild has a list of grievances, and might be going on strike shortly. Expect a somewhat more restrained tone – in the fashion as well as the speeches.
The red carpet pre-show will start at 3:05pm PST on TNT or TBS, and will last two hours – but we won’t be able to see the actual show till 8pm PST, as it will be tape delayed here on the West Coast (on TNT and TBS) – but if you want to see who’s winning, you can check CNN.com, MSNBC.com, Google news, or almost any internet news outlet between 5pm and 8pm, when it airs on the East Coast. E! will have a red carpet pre-show airing from 5pm to 8pm on Sunday; TV Guide Channel will air between 4pm and 8 pm, and CNN, between 6pm and 8pm.
The female nominees for the SAG Awards are exactly the same as for the Oscars on Feb 22, but with two exceptions: Kate Winslet is nominated in BOTH SAG categories, leading actress and supporting actress – but for the Oscars, she is nominated as only Leading Actress for “The Reader.” And Marisa Tomei did not get a SAG nomination for “The Wrestler,” because the fifth nominee in that category is of course Kate Winslet.
The female presenters at the SAGS are Taraji P. Henson, Amy Adams, Freida Pinto, Viola Davis, Kyra Sedgwick, Amy Poehler, Susan Sarandon and Christina Applegate – and yes, all the major tv stars will be there, too. And yes, Brad and Angelina are both nominated, and will definitely be there – even though they were in Paris this week to promote the international opening of “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.”
THE SUNDANCE LOOK
Jan20
So what IS the Sundance look? While a big chunk of Hollywood is dressing up in DC, and a lot of stars are here in L.A, getting ready for the Screen Actors Guild Awards this Sunday – the stars of the next wave of indie movies are up in Park City, Utah, for the Sundance Film Festival, gathering swag wherever they go: blackberries, new phones, jeans, sweaters, hats, bags, UGG boots, etc. But it’s not exactly a fashion festival – it’s so cold that female stars generally wear leggings, boots, big sweaters, hats and jeans – and the au naturale look. Except, of course, for Paris Hilton, who always finds a way to add a bit of the bunny to everything. She and Denise Richards were both promoting their E! reality shows. Amy Poehler, fresh from giving birth, was promoting her summer movie, as was Brittney Snow. Also sighted at Sundance: Emily Blunt, Anne Heche, Susan Sarandon, Emma Roberts, and Christina Millian.

Hugo Boss on Susan Sarandon? Christian LaCroix on Freida Pinto? These are not labels that usually wind up on the backs of fashion-hungry female red carpet trawlers. We are more used to seeing the Valentino’s, Armani’s, Versaces and Gucci’s. However, both these smaller labels switched pr firms and hired Bismarck Phillips to do their red carpet bidding – and clearly it worked. Freida Pinto wore Christian LaCroix, and Susan Sarandon wore a Hugo Boss tux. And MHA Media – run by Marilyn Heston, who putt Jimmy Choo and MAC Cosmetics on the red carpet map years ago – had a BIG score, getting their designer clients Reem Acra and Elie Saab on SIX major women at the Globes. Who says good pr doesn’t count? - Merle Ginsberg

Most of the major “swag suite” action for awards shows – suites where companies use gifting as branding, giving out handbags, sunglasses, beauty products, and even conduct beauty treatments – usually hover around Oscar week, the last week of February. But they aren’t exclusive to the Oscars – usually some crop up for the Golden Globes. Since HBO isn’t involved in the Oscars but are HEAVILY involved with the Globes – with nominations for its shows “Entourage,” “In Treatment,” and “True Blood” and its movies “Bernard and Doris,” “Recount” and “John Adams.” The superstar cable network will host the HBO Luxury Lounge suite this Thursday and Friday at the Four Seasons on Doheny in Beverly Hills, with beauty treatments like mani-pedi’s and facials, and gifts of Rebecca Minkoff bags, Tacori diamonds, Duch Bicycle bikes, and fine jewelry from Italian companies Ferarri and Garvelli. BUT – you can be sure these treats will be reserved for nominees like Susan Sarandon, Laura Linney, Laura Dern, Anna Pacquin, Kevin Spacey, Adrian Grenier and Ralph Fiennes. We’ve also heard the Aussie dudes from “Flight of the Conchords,” which is coming back to HBO for its second season, will be on hand, too. And who wouldn’t show up to be photographed for ten minutes when they’re going to be handed all this free stuff?
Attention: The Emmy’s are this Sunday: do you know where your gown is? Inside word is it won’t be the most glam Emmy’s of all time, for several reasons: 1/ the economy, and 2/ many of the female nominees are of the older variety, i.e., Sally Field, Glenn Close, Holly Hunter, Diahann Carroll, Ellen Burstyn, Judi Dench, Candace Bergen, Jean Smart, Holland Taylor, Eileen Atkins – and these ladies are not fashion fixated. But of course, The Desperate Housewives will be there, so will the casts of “Ugly Betty” and “Grey’s Anatomy,” and Tina Fey, Christina Applegate, Mary-Louise Parker, Vanessa Williams, Susan Sarandon, Debra Messing, Rita Wilson, Mariska Hargitay, Rachel Griffiths, Kyra Sedgwick, Cynthia Nixon, Laura Linney and Anjelica Huston will all be on hand, too. At least Heidi Klum will add some fashion glam as one of the seven hosts of the show. We know she’s wearing Giorgio Armani on the carpet – but she will probably have at least six changes. Her stylist Maryam Malakpour is NOT talking, that’s for sure.
Once you’ve got the dress (Barneys has the fall Dries van Noten collection in the window), start thinking parties: The hot ticket party is of course the HBO after party, at the Pacific Design Center on Sunday night. That’s where the casts of “Entourage,” “John Addams,” and “Bernard and Doris” will convene (Ralph Fiennes at an Emmy party? Well, there’s a - for everything), and no doubt, more stars, writers, and directors. The other hot party is the joint effort between Entertainment Tonight and People Magazine at the Disney Hall, which will have Jason Bentley as deejay, and Billy Idol as musical entertainment. (A step down from Prince and Duran Duran, who’ve performed in years’ past - but from the same decade as they are, anyway.) TV Guide’s party has the hippest entertainment: new band MGMT and The Bravery will play. Twentieth Century Fox and Fox Broadcasting cancelled their usual post-Emmy soiree, blaming on the economy. Yes, we know Rupert Murdoch is hurting bad, right? - Merle Ginsberg
