There’s certainly sports action at home right now, but most of the world’s attention to sports right now is shifting to Johannesburg, South Africa, where the World Cup Games – played only once every four years – are about to get under way. Even in Israel, where Fashionrules is studying the culture – and the fashion culture – there’s a huge amount of excitement about the World Cup Games, and giant tv’s are being set up on the beaches of Tel Aviv, which city residents can see for blocks on end, even in the middle of the night. And just to let you know the magnitude of the event we’re dealing with – sort of like the Olympics of Europe – the opening night acts included Fergie and the Black Eyed Peas, Shakira, Alicia Keys, John Legend, Amadou and Mariam, Angelique Kidjo – all in some pretty extreme and sexy looks, because there obviously playing on the world’s stage. With this amount of talent sharing a stage in the same evening, you’ve got to realize the amount of largess and energy the World Cup is about. It’s worth watching in America, even though it doesn’t really relate to our culture.

American Music Awards 2009

Sure, “Mad Men” is gone, “The Prisoner” is wrapped, but our favorite tv night, Sunday night tv this weekend features the Seinfeld-filledfinale of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” on HBO. Well, Tivo that one, because the American Music Awards are on this Sunday night on ABC at 8pm. Almost every major musical performer of our time will be on – from Mary J. Blige to Shakira to Jennifer Lopez (who will no doubt be wearing Louboutin’s, no matter what she sings), Eminem, Rihanna, Alicia Keys, Whitney Houston, Lady Gaga, Kelly Clarkson – and Janet Jackson will be opening with an eight minute number. Adam Lambert is doing a number with ten dancers – five guys, five girls – and has already told MTV that “the wardrobe is amazing.” So not only will be a battle of the tonsils – it will be a battle of the wardrobes, as to whose look gets the most attention – good or bad. Daughtry, Keri Hilson, NeYo, Jay Z, and even “Modern Family’s” Sofia Vergara will be there. We’ll be reporting on all the outfits – the good, the bad – and the not so good – on Sunday night and Monday. We’re not expecting gowns – we’re expecting SHINE. Metallics do well with stage lights – and so do mini dresses. Who will have the SHORTEST dress on? Will it be Lady Gaga or Lady Lopez?

Shakira

Here is the look from Shakira’s new single called “She-Wolf,” that will be out July 13th – this is a still from the video for the song, shot by Jake Nava. Shakira’s new smooth Britney Spears-looking hair is by Kim Kimble, who does the locks of Beyonce’, Mary J. Blige, Kerry Washington, Gabrielle Union, and Vanessa Williams. Shakira wrote the new song with John Hill of Santigold, about a metaphorical she-wolf. The full album will be out in October from Epic Records.
Clearly, the Britney look sells, right? –
