One does not necessarily have to be a basterd to make an inglorious entrance at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. It can happen to anybody. Just ask Anna Paquin. She’s gorgeous, she’s on a hot show (HBO’s “True Blood”), and she came with her co-star/boyfriend, Stephen Moyer. What could go wrong? She wore a short tight loud printed Parisian designer dress to the SAG Awards, unlike her usual more restrained elegant selections. The Alexander McQueen dress, which looks fine on a runway, but not at a black tie Hollywood awards show – is wrong wrong wrong for this occasion. It might be funkily fine for the MTV Awards, but not the SAGS. She looks like a teenager in a bad summer frock – in the winter. It’s an arch look – the wearer needs to be in on the joke. She obviously isn’t. This is a case of a stylist getting too stylish and not elegant enough. We actually liked Patricia Arquette’s blue green sparkly Riser Goodwin gown – made by her good friend Rosetta Getty. Getty’s gowns are great, and she makes some terrific eveningwear for a small line. But did Patricia really have to make out with her husband, “Hung” star Thomas Jane, in front of the papparazzi? It wasn’t just like there were two cameras on the red carpet at the Shrine – there were hundreds!!!!!!!!!!! This way, she obscures the dress, but gives us lots of information on the state of her (often shaky) marriage. Wow – now we feel better. Save it for Perez, Patricia. We want the damn dress! And what was Cheryl Hines thinking in this ill-fitting dress that does not do her any favors? Larry David may rethink getting back together with her character if “Curb Your Enthusiasm” decides to come back anytime soon.
Bruno Frissoni, the Italian designer of the French exclusive shoe label Roger Vivier – which is owned by Italian company J.P. Tod’s - it’s all very international – was in Los Angeles this week, and his L.A. representative, Anne Crawford, threw a private dinner for him and a number of his L.A. fans, including Shiva Rose, Jamie Tisch, Rachel Zoe, Michel and Sally Perrin (of Perrin Bags), Monique L’hullier, Rosetta Getty, Cameron Silver – and the big surprise – famed French model and former Karl and Chanel model, Ines de la Fressange. Ines now has her own label, but wears Vivier shoes all the time, and was in town on vacation, and decided to drop by to see Bruno. As you can imagine, the footwear in the room was even better than the clothes. L.A. is getting to be a very international shoe town. And Vivier shoes are the first to fly out of Neiman Marcus.
There are very few people who could bring Prince and Jennifer Lopez and Karl Lagerfeld and Vogue’s Anna Wintour together in the same room - but Donatella Versace is one of those people. The Fashion Group International – which has branches in New York and Los Angeles – had its 25th anniversary event in Thursday night in New York City – honoring Donatella Versace, who received her award from both Jennifer (in a pale violet satin one shoulder bombshell Versace dress) and Prince, a famed Versace wearer himself. Donatella also brought her daughter Allegra Versace, who is not often in the limelight, as she’s suffered from anorexia for years, and has been in treatment at UCLA here in L.A. for some time. Balthazar Getty also joined the group – while his estranged wife, Rosetta Getty, was at a cocktail party for Vanity Fair’s Michael Roberts in L.A. Thursday night. They weren’t the only names in attendance: Italian Vogue’s Franca Sozzani flew i, as did Ashley Olsen, Debra Messing, Blake Lively, Meryl Streep’s actress daughter Mamie Gummer, Isaac Mizrahi and Kate Bosworth.
