We love that at both the Globes and the SAG Awards, some of the best hair styles and looks were truly sculpted – and we can see that amazing gowns from amazing designers demand a hair style that’s dressy and sculptural. Sandra Bullock’s McQueen gown with its high shoulders demanded her hair be up. Holly Hunter’s AMAZING geode and diamond earrings on Holly Hunter (in her Ferretti gown) demanded that Holly’s hair be up. For a long time, a lot of actresses wanted to wear their hair down on the red carpet in an attempt to look young. Now they’ve learned that hair down with a couture gown generally just looks messy or two young. It might be okay on Miley Cyrus, but no one else.

We LOVED the wavy hairstyles and sculpted hairstyles at the SAGS on Tina Fey, Diane Kruger and Marion Cotillard. Nominee Diane Kruger’s glamorous asymmetrical Jason Wu gown was the inspiration for the soft, romantic side-chignon that celebrity stylist Mark Townsend created for the SAG awards.

“I started by taking a small amount of Moroccanoil® Treatment and finger combed it through Diane’s dry hair” explained Townsend. “I then took 2 inch sections of hair and wrapped them around a 1 and 1/2 inch curling iron to create waves all over the head. Next, I took a small amount of Moroccanoil® Hydrating Styling Cream in my palms and then raked my hands through the hair to break up the waves, eliminate any fly-aways, and give the hair a soft hold. Next, I gathered her hair behind her left ear and loosely braided it, gathering about an inch from the bottom, then looped the end of the braid back up and pinned it behind her left ear. I finished by giving the style hold with L’Oreal Elnett Extra Strong Hold.” The result was a very 1930′s Jean Harlow movie star style that was breathtaking with her Jason Wu gown.

Marion Cotillard’s romantic, somewhat retro hair look for the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards was created by celebrity stylist Robert Vetica, was the perfect accent for the dramatic short Elie Saab white dress that she wore.

The look was a creative mix of ultra-smooth, shiny texture with a deconstructed, somewhat messy bun. Rich, silky shine and smooth texture was essential to the success of the look, explained Vetica. “I started by applying Moroccanoil® Treatment on wet hair to give the maximum shine possible and an easy blow-dry. Next, I applied Moroccanoil® Hydrating Cream, for definition and soft hold, and created a low side part. I then pin-curled the sides toward the direction the face, and then pin-curled another section in the back to give hair added movement. Once the hair was dry, I brushed it out, took the full length of hair and made a ponytail. Next, I wrapped a million dollar emerald and diamond bracelet from Chopard around the base of the ponytail, and pinned it strategically into a messy bun. I finished the look with a light misting of Moroccanoil® Glimmer Shine Spray to give hair a luminous finish that would last throughout the evening.”

Clearly, Mark Townsend and Robert Vettica are funded by Moroccan Oil products to some extent, but they do make good products – some of the best – and clearly these two guys are at the top of the black tie hair game – as are Kruger and Cotillard.

You’ve probably noticed, if you’ve driven by the Paul Smith store on Melrose near Harper since the weekend, a large billboard of Khloe Kardashian – the wild child of the Kardashian clan – essentially naked, with poufy romantic hair – in a new PETA anti-fur “I’d rather go naked” campaign. It was shot by Troy Jensen, celebrity makeup artist to many a Hollywood big wig (Paris Hilton, Rachel Griffiths, Kim Kardashian, Nicole Scherzinger of the Pussycat Dolls),  who’s also transitioned into shooting his own photographs. The PETA campaign represents the first major collaboration between Khloe and Troy – so Fashionrules decided to interview the talented Mr. Jensen, to hear the buzz – and controversy – about this new body-revealing campaign.

FASHION RULES:  So we hear that bloggers are accusing you of heavily airbrushing Khloe’s body!

TROY JENSEN:  Yes – some blogs are saying I photoshopped her completely.  And tt really wasn’t the case. Khloe spent a lot of time preparing for the shoot. I clean up all of my pictures a little, but not a ton of retouching was done on this one. It’s true Khloe’s weight fluctuates about five pounds, and people are very unkind sometimes in what they write. But she’s a real woman. To me she looks amazing.,  But I really did NOT do any body shaping on her.– I didn’t do computer sculpting or liposuction on it at all. She has very smooth skin.  She’s also the wild child of the group so I wanted wild hair – it’s a beautiful shot.

FASHION RULES:  You’re known primarily as a celebrity makeup artist, to Paris Hilton, Nicole S, Kim Kardashian, and you’ve done a ton of magazine shoots. How did this transition to photography evolve?

TROY JENSEN: I started shooting myself about five years ago. There’s not a lot of editorial work done in L.A. for magazines, so it’s really celebrity portraiture. I would have an idea of a makeup look I wanted to do, and I’d hire a model and shoot her myself. Then my makeup clients need head shots and I would shoot them. I kept it very on the DL. I’m very much still a working makeup artist, and I didn’t want photographers I was working on shoots with to think I was stealing their lighting. Then friends who were doing albums asked me to shoot their album covers.

FASHION RULES:  And is being a celebrity makeup artist a conflict with being a photographer?

TROY JENSEN: It could be interpreted by some people that way. I actually thought of coming up with a pseudonym for the photography work. I thought I might have to stop doing one or the other. But what I do is beauty, fashion and glamour – so really, there’s nothing different about being behind the camera for me. And I find I’m much less demanding on a shoot when doing makeup, because I know on my shoots, we’ll do it with my total vision.

FASHION RULES:  And you do hair for your shoots as well?

TROY JENSEN:

Yes. I did the hair for Khloe’s PETA shoot. I have learned so much from the great hair people I’ve worked with – Kim Kimble, Robert Vettica, Chris McMillan. Extentions, color, cut – I just got into the groove of doing it myself. It was my vision with The make up and hair for Khloe’s wild cafefree look, and I usually do alot of the hair on my shoots, but this shoot with Khloe I called on my friend Celebrity Hair Stylist Frankie Paine who’s known for styling such beauties as Eva Longoria,Nicole Scherzinger and Fergie. Frankie did an amazing job bringing my vision to life

FASHION RULES:  What other photography projects are you working on at the moment?

TROY JENSEN:  I do a lot of work with Kim Kardashian, Khloe’s big sister. We just did a new calendar for her, and a campaign for shoes, one for hot chocolate – she’s looking very JLo right now, it’s a whole new Kim. A fresher sexier Kim. Her style and my style are on the same page right now. She’s my muse at the moment.

FASHION RULES:  It’s hard to believe any Kardashian sister is going to give up fur and leather for PETA!

TROY JENSEN:  I know PETA is very pleased with the campaign, and they have big plans for it. It’s really about bringing awareness – you don’t have to stop wearing fur or leather completely, but we need to know how all of this affects animals. Khloe’s whole position was to bring awareness to how the animals are treated. Yes, she does own some fur – but she’s going to sell it, now that she knows more about it. It’s about making small steps –every step counts.

FASHION RULES:  Are you going to keep doing double duty?

TROY JENSEN: I have a lot of really great opportunities as a makeup artist, and that career grants me a lot of potential. But I also love taking pictures. Trust me, I will not be turning anything down right now!
