Kelly Wearstler and Gwen Stefani

We were lucky enough to be on the guest list for the fabulous party Kelly Wearstler through at the Avalon Hotel Wednesday night – in honor of her new art book, HUE, and a re-design of the hotel’s restaurant (Oliverio) and pool area. Kelly, known well for her wardrobe and her outrageous looks on Bravo’s “Top Design” (where she’s a judge), rocked a short tight black dress, low black boots with high heels, and the biggest hair we’ve seen since Poison was making heavy metal music videos. It was totally eighties redux. Looking rad right next to her was her pal Gwen Stefani, in a black tunic, leggings, cage-style strap shoes, and a black leather jacket. We loved Gwen’s positioning of her blue lace bra under the black clothing, with that hit of red lipstick. That’s pretty eighties, as well. In the cool crowd, we saw hair stylist and landscape architect Art Luna, designer Madga Berliner, members of No Doubt (more…)

Catwalk is my new favorite store

God forgive me, before this weekend, I had never been to Catwalk – the fabulous vintage store at 459 N. Fairfax, right in the heart of the Fairfax district, between Melrose and Beverly. It’s owned by two of L.A.’s coolest women, Renee Johnston and Michelle Webb – these two are walking archives of fashion history – and also, movie, music video and tv history. Michelle produced music videos in New York for many many years, and Renee was a stylist, who branched into directing music videos. Together they opened Catwalk seven years ago – and their landlord is Julie Newmar, the original Catwoman in the “Batman” tv series. They named it “Catwalk” for her! They have two amazing rooms in the store (which is open Tues to Sat from one pm to 6pm, or by appointment on Sun and Mon) – the front room is chockablock with archival items by Missoni, Chanel (the MOST amazing Chanel flap jacket, very Amelia Earhardt, for $1200), original YSL blouses – tons of them – Hermes bags, Chanel bags (better prices than in Resurrection or Decades, for sure), mens items fabulous hats, shoes, boots (even punk boots with studs) – Dolce, and also, fabulous costume jewelry. I saw a checked newish Alexander McQueen suit that was just crazy! (more…)
