A lot of the spring Miu Miu collection by Miuccia Prada for 2010 is filled with polka dot pants, lean tailoring, sheer tulle pieces with crystal embroideries – they are delicate and bold at the same time. Here, we’re showing you two runway looks that took place in October – but it’s interesting to see what diffuses into the company’s new spring ad campaign that breaks soon. It was shot by famed ad and editorial photographers Mert and Marcus (who started with the famed Louis Vuitton campaign), and the model here is a new face, Lindsey Wixson, whose got an interesting combo of power and vulnerability. But in these ads – what’s REALLY front and center – is the shoes and bags! Clearly, this is what is selling for Miu Miu these days. The bag’s cute, and white bags are hot for spring – but those SHOES look like something Elton John wore in the seventies. They look like a twisted ankle or broken toe waiting to happen. Delicate clothes with giant cloddy seventies shoes? Miuccia Prada has gone a bit accessories mad!
These days, there are so many designer collections a year: fall, holiday, resort, spring, summer. But we’ve never heard of a Valentine’s Day collection – particularly just before Thanksgiving. However, we received a booklet of images from the Miu Miu Valentine’s Day collection 2010. It’s a series of mostly red bags, very adorned, and some jewelry and t-shirts that are festive and romantic – and certainly, men need gifts to buy for women for February 14th. We’re in a holiday sort of mood, so we thought we’d show it to you.

The MOCA thirtieth anniversary gala held this weekend at the L.A. based museum not only raised $4 million for the financially ailing art institution – with gallerist Larry Gagosian ponying up half a million dollars at auction for the pink Damien Hirst piano that Lady Gaga played (with the Bolshoi Ballet dancing)- it had a wide spectrum of fashion, from gowns to corsets to cocktail to mini’s. It just shows you that anything goes with creative black tie these days. If you’re Kate Bosworth, you can wear a tiny print Proenza Schoulder mini dress. Chloe Sevigny wore a white Miu Miu embellished mini. Jessica Alba wore a more demure black cocktail dress, thatwas actually knee-length – but paired it with red shoes. Eva Mendes was somewhat demure as well, in a black and tan kneelength Miu Miu cocktail dress. Why so much Miu Miu?
Glorious Melanie Laurent

Last year was the year “Slumdog Millionaire’s” Frieda Pinto became a fashion star. This awards season it looks to be all about two new European actresses, “An Education’s” Carey Mulligan, and “Inglorious Basterd’s” Melanie Laurent. Laurent looked amazing in the pivotal scene of Quentin Tarantino’s 1940’s set film, but we have little knowledge of how she looks off-screen. Well, here she is, in a spring 2010 blue Miu Miu gown at the French premiere of her new movie, “The Concert.” She has several other new French films in the works, but since so few French films actually make it to American distribution, we may never see them – unless we’re flying to Europe and catch them on a flight! However, European designers are certainly taking notice.

Young women can go kinda trendy at the Teen Choice Awards – it’s hot out, and obviously it’s a very young audience. But Nikki Reed from “Twilight” and “Thirteen” did herself proud, wearing a pink-beige Miu Miu printed silk faile fall 09 dress, suede cut out ankle booties also from Miu Miu, and a black studded nappa leather clutch from fall winter. The dress may be short, but the combo of the waved subtle 1920’s style retro hair, and pink color and the grey booties makes her much less tough, and much more ladylike – but not too girly. She hit it right on the money – this is how to wear a fall look (the right thing for the fashion biz now) in the summer. It’s not as easy as it looks.

Sure, we like Kirsten Dunst in this fall Miu Miu teal strapless minidress in silk faille – which she donned to the opening night of the HollyShorts Film Festival this week. But notice the hair – Dunst has been given a tough time about her fragile piece-y hair, which often looks like she just fell out of bed.
Suddenly, she’s got long wavey luxurious locks – what happened? We’d say sewn-in, glued-on or clipped on hair extentions – and it certainly makes a huge improvement. No, we don’t love everything fake – just hair! – Merle Ginsberg

We just got an email from Renato at Miu Miu on Rodeo - and a number of pieces from the great Miu Miu fall collection are in the store. We are plotzing for this smooth leather jacket and the belted grey blazer. How bout that waist shaping belt? What a cincher! In any case, here they are, and you can go peak at them and say hi at the store, too.
We’re only going to show you “investment pieces” for fall – in other words, pieces you can wear forever, and that are not specifically trendy, but that really DO say “right now” and “forever.” That’s a relationship we can get behind. – MG

We went to the premier of the new HBO series “Hung” last night on the Paramount lot – is it a comedy? A sex farce? A serioud dramatic social commentary? It’s all of the above, actually, premiering this Sunday June 28th. It was exec produced by Alexander Payne, the director (and producer) of “Sideways,” “About Schmidt,” and “Election” – and Payne directed the first episode – with cool guy actor Thomas Jane as a Midwestern high school teacher and basketball coach whose divorce and life leaves him SO broke, he resorts to the oldest profession in the world – just refer to the show’s title to figure it out. Anne Heche plays his neurotic yuppie ex-wife. And a TV actress named Rebecca Creskoff plays Lenore – a personal shopper, who drops references to Miu Miu shoes, and who wears what she thinks is high fashion. (It IS set in Detroit, after all.) Thomas Jane, as the nouveau manwhore of the title, is sexy and depressed at the same time – the perfect way to deal with our current economy. This show’s gonna be a hit – and it’s nice to have something to look forward to at Sunday night’s at ten again. (But “Entourage” is back in July, and “Mad Men” in August – thank GOD!) Sunday night is ALL about cable, kids. – Merle Ginsberg

Prada and Miu Miu are pretty much the last two major brands not to have boutiques in South Coast Plaza – which has Marni, YSL, Christian Louboutin, Max Mara, Burberry, Chloe, Escada – everything! They will open both brands’ boutiques before summer, and have major events, which could include Miuccia Prada stopping off in Los Angeles – something she rarely does. Exciting! We’ll keep you posted.
