Stylist Jennifer Rade – the L.A. Fashion maven famous for styling music videos, commercials – and celebs Angelina Jolie, Kim Kardashian and many others – has been named Style Ambassador to Ilori Sunglass boutiques across the country, that means Jen will bring her styling wisdom and dressing tips to in-store and media events at Ilori Boutiques – showing women how to choose the right designer frames for their face shapes, hair color and to their own personal dressing style. Designer eyewear, after all, is every bit as vital to an outfit as a bag and shoes – especially in southern California.
I have been impressed time and again by Ilori’s exceptional assortment of styles, says Rade.
We have a feeling Angelina, Kim and Jen herself will be turning up in some Ilori looks in the near future! We’re sure glad an LA based stylist got to be a style director for eyewear!

Here at Fashion Rules, we love to tell you about the “bargain” $200.00 and $300.00 shoes. But we’re feeling a little sheepish right now. Kim Kardashian is taking that “work with the masses, eat with the classes” mantra much further. She and some savvy business partners are launching what they’re calling a “Shoe Society,” ShoeDazzle.com, which you apparently can click onto starting today, March 19th.
ShoeDazzle.com says it uses the expertise of Hollywood stylists (Kim’s stylist is the fabulous Jen Rade, who also dresses Angelina Jolie) to recommend shoes every month based on the customer’s “fashion personality” as determined by an included “style sensibility questionnaire.” But what’s even more remarkable is that these shoes will be $39.00 a pair, including shipping. We don’t know where you can get cute shoes for $39.00 – except for the very occasional Target stumble-upon-it find.
Shoedazzle.com is starting with 5000 charter members, and everyone after that will be added to a waiting list, and notified when memberships are available. Hmmm . . . . waiting list for $39.00 shoes? This sounds like a VERY different sort of retail concept. We’ve heard of waiting list for $5000.00 Birkin bags by Hermes, but not for anything under several thousand dollars. But the words “waiting list” are very motivating to shopping women, we all know.
If you want to go to the questionnaire, check out ShoeDazzle. Kardashian has appointed herself “chief fashion stylist” of the brand, and says that she’s choosing styles “I would wear myself.” Kim Kardashian in $39.00? She’ll probably make so much money from this venture – she’s turning into the brunette Paris Hilton - that could never ever happen. Those red soles in our photo are the dead giveaway of Christian Louboutins.

Kim Kardashian let it all – almost – hang out in a photo shoot she did with her boyfriend, New Orleans Saints running back Reggie Bush, for GQ Magazine – their first together – and even before the mag’s come out, she’s posted the pics on her own personal website – they are lighting up the internet at this moment.
The photos were taken by Harper’s Bazaar fashion photo Alexi Lubomirski, and for shots of the couple in little bathing suits (and Kim in lingerie), they’re actually kinda – wholesome. Here’s one to whet your appetite before you can get GQ, which Kim says prints all kinds of insights into their personal relationship. WHAT? Kim Kardashian letting the public into her private life? No!!

You’ve probably noticed, if you’ve driven by the Paul Smith store on Melrose near Harper since the weekend, a large billboard of Khloe Kardashian – the wild child of the Kardashian clan – essentially naked, with poufy romantic hair – in a new PETA anti-fur “I’d rather go naked” campaign. It was shot by Troy Jensen, celebrity makeup artist to many a Hollywood big wig (Paris Hilton, Rachel Griffiths, Kim Kardashian, Nicole Scherzinger of the Pussycat Dolls), who’s also transitioned into shooting his own photographs. The PETA campaign represents the first major collaboration between Khloe and Troy – so Fashionrules decided to interview the talented Mr. Jensen, to hear the buzz – and controversy – about this new body-revealing campaign.
FASHION RULES: So we hear that bloggers are accusing you of heavily airbrushing Khloe’s body!
TROY JENSEN: Yes – some blogs are saying I photoshopped her completely. And tt really wasn’t the case. Khloe spent a lot of time preparing for the shoot. I clean up all of my pictures a little, but not a ton of retouching was done on this one. It’s true Khloe’s weight fluctuates about five pounds, and people are very unkind sometimes in what they write. But she’s a real woman. To me she looks amazing., But I really did NOT do any body shaping on her.– I didn’t do computer sculpting or liposuction on it at all. She has very smooth skin. She’s also the wild child of the group so I wanted wild hair – it’s a beautiful shot.
FASHION RULES: You’re known primarily as a celebrity makeup artist, to Paris Hilton, Nicole S, Kim Kardashian, and you’ve done a ton of magazine shoots. How did this transition to photography evolve?
TROY JENSEN: I started shooting myself about five years ago. There’s not a lot of editorial work done in L.A. for magazines, so it’s really celebrity portraiture. I would have an idea of a makeup look I wanted to do, and I’d hire a model and shoot her myself. Then my makeup clients need head shots and I would shoot them. I kept it very on the DL. I’m very much still a working makeup artist, and I didn’t want photographers I was working on shoots with to think I was stealing their lighting. Then friends who were doing albums asked me to shoot their album covers.
FASHION RULES: And is being a celebrity makeup artist a conflict with being a photographer?
TROY JENSEN: It could be interpreted by some people that way. I actually thought of coming up with a pseudonym for the photography work. I thought I might have to stop doing one or the other. But what I do is beauty, fashion and glamour – so really, there’s nothing different about being behind the camera for me. And I find I’m much less demanding on a shoot when doing makeup, because I know on my shoots, we’ll do it with my total vision.
FASHION RULES: And you do hair for your shoots as well?
TROY JENSEN:
FASHION RULES: What other photography projects are you working on at the moment?
TROY JENSEN: I do a lot of work with Kim Kardashian, Khloe’s big sister. We just did a new calendar for her, and a campaign for shoes, one for hot chocolate – she’s looking very JLo right now, it’s a whole new Kim. A fresher sexier Kim. Her style and my style are on the same page right now. She’s my muse at the moment.
FASHION RULES: It’s hard to believe any Kardashian sister is going to give up fur and leather for PETA!
TROY JENSEN: I know PETA is very pleased with the campaign, and they have big plans for it. It’s really about bringing awareness – you don’t have to stop wearing fur or leather completely, but we need to know how all of this affects animals. Khloe’s whole position was to bring awareness to how the animals are treated. Yes, she does own some fur – but she’s going to sell it, now that she knows more about it. It’s about making small steps –every step counts.
FASHION RULES: Are you going to keep doing double duty?
TROY JENSEN: I have a lot of really great opportunities as a makeup artist, and that career grants me a lot of potential. But I also love taking pictures. Trust me, I will not be turning anything down right now!
KIM KARDASHIAN CALENDAR
Nov25
Kim Kardashian is the ultimate pin up, right? And now she really will be. The girl with amazing eyes – and – other body parts – will have her own calendar, which she is shooting this week with her favorite makeup artist, Troy Jensen. Troy isn’t only rimming those famous cat eyes, he’s shooting the pics, too. We can’t wait to see what Kim chooses to wear – or not wear – for the twelve months of 2009. It’s just more to look forward to seeing in the year to come.
“W,” Oliver Stone’s new movie, opens this week, and the early reviews are that the biopic of the least popular American president in history will actually be very popular. But in the fashion world, “W” is most immediately associated with W Magazine, the monthly consumer version of Women’s Wear Daily, considered to be amongst the artsiest and chicest high fashion magazines in the world. It’s widely praised for its photography, often running long portfolios by well-known photots and art photographers of either fashion shoots or celebrities – or a mix of the two. Michael Thompson, Steven Klein and Phillip Lorca DiCorcia are three very well known photographers who are often shown on the pages of W Magazine.
The November issue, you probably know – unless you’ve been under a rock or simply obsessed by the election – has Angelina Jolie on the cover, for her new movie, “Changeling,” for which it’s rumored she’ll be Oscar nominated. All the photos, including the cover shot – in which she’s nursing one of her new twins – were taken by Brad Pitt. Pitt has expressed an interest in photography before – he worked with pal Stephen Klein on the very long portfolio for W in his character for “Fight Club,” and again when he and Angelina did the shoot for “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” right after his divorce from Jennifer Aniston. This time he actually got behind the camera, and the result is unique: Angelina looks beautiful, rather funky, making unusual faces and clowning into the lens, She worked with longtime stylist Jen Rade, who has also dressed her for the Oscars, the Cannes Film Festival, and most of her appearances in the last few years. It’s a big career boost for Rade, who’s also worked with such wide-ranging artists as Tupac, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Pink and Marilyn Manson, and is also a movie and commercial costumer.
Meanwhile, Angelina models an interesting new white t shirt in two photos, which is by L.A. based-company L’Agence, which will be available in November at Fred Segal Melrose. But you can check it out now at the brand’s website, Lagencefashion.com. L’Agence is going to enter the marketplace in a big way – with a lot of street style, and very reasonable prices. A number of well-known L.A. stylists contributed look ideas to the line, which has been in development for a year.
And watch for more of Jen Rade’s stylist work on Angelina, Pink and Kim Kardashian in the next few months. Rade is known for putting all kinds of labels on her clients, and vintage clothing – “it’s never about the price, it’s always about the dress,” is her motto.
One of the more important events that is truly Hollywood when it comes to fashion is the Rodeo Drive Walk of Style Event – which is happening again, this Thursday night September 25, honoring the absolute King of Shoes, Manolo Blahnik, who will be flying in from Paris to honor we Angelenos with his well-shod presence.
His predecessors who’ve received this award are an impressive group to be number with: Giorgio Armani, Tom Ford, Donatella and Gianni Versace, James Galanos, production and costume designer Milena Canonero (“Marie Antoinette”), Salvatore Ferragamo, and photographers Mario Testini and Herb Ritts.
Lucy Liu, starring this season in “Dirty Sexy Money,” will present Monsieur Blahnik with his award, and “Mad Men” star January Jones and L.A. fashions star China Chow will also be involved with his presentation. Hilary Duff, Tori Spelling, Molly Sims, Kim Kardashian, Nicky Hilton, Jennifer Morrison, Chelsea Handler, and Lily Collins are also expected. Apparently, Manolo is very touched by China Chow’s involvement – he was friends with her late mother, famed fashionista Tina Chow. After all, his fabulous footwear career spans 30 years.
Four hundred guests will celebrate Manolo by toasting to this week’s DVD release of “Sex and the City” (the tv show that put M.B’s name – and heels – on the map), looking at an exhibition of some of his classic shoes from the movie “Marie Antoinette,” from the Brit tv show “Absolutely Fabulous,” from “Sex and the City,” sketches of shoes, and collaborations with designers, including John Galliano.
The master will also signing shoes at Neiman Marcus on Wilshire in Bev Hills on Friday morning at 11 am – and there are sketches on view along both Wilshire and Rodeo Drives all week.
Not only do we love that Manolo’s are sexy, make the legs and feet look so much better than they do, and that they are made in varying heel heights – we LOVE that they are, somehow – also comfortable. Almost nothing on earth looks THAT good and feels that good, too.
I feel like I simply have to rush into Neiman’s and snag that kitten heeled satin slide with big black bow JUST to get a signature on Friday. I’ve never had anybody sign a SHOE before. Does that mean I could never have them cleaned?Might be worth it. – Merle Ginsberg
*These fall collection Manolo Blahniks are all available at NeimanMarcus.com.
