The spacious and modern new Missoni store in Beverly Hills was the site of a major young Hollywood fashion fete on Thursday night, as all the PYT’s came out to pay homage to the New York king of the PYT’s, Derek Blassberg. The society journalist darling of the moment – and there’s always one – was celebrating the launch of his first tome, “Classy,” with a Tiffany blue cover – it teaches young ladies how to be true ladies. It separates the skanks and tarts from the ladies. It shows ladies how to sit. How to eat. And the fact is, in modern American, these sorts of old manners and rules have pretty much died out, so Blassberg is in a way bringing back old school protocol and channeling Miss Manners. There were lots of girls in colorful Missoni striped knits – and a major hippie headband theme was going around, from Nicole Richie to Margherita Missoni. After a rather chilly L.A. spring, it was an explosion of color and pales, from everyone from Kate Bosworth to Liz Goldwyn to Tara Subkoff and Mischa Barton. Stylists Jeanne Yang, Tanya Gill, Magda Berliner, Maryam Malakpour (in the spring Isabel Marant fur which she declared, “not too hot”), George Kotsiopolous and Elizabeth Stewart all popped in to meet this New York staple of the society scene. And what was the dashing Mr. Blassberg wearing? “A little Dolce,” he replied of his snappy raffish suit. “We’re livin’ large tonight. Champagne and cupcakes.” If we learned anything, it’s that Derek Blassberg – with a little help from the pr film Starworks – knows hot to pull a crowd. And that takes talent. – Merle Ginsberg

All of sudden, Celine – the French brand owned by LVMH – is back and on the map. That’s because former Chloe designer Phoebe Philo landed there and showed her first collection last year, and while Chloe was flirty, ruffly and girly, Celine is clean and crisp. It also is making great use of leather, in its shoes and the many leather dresses, tops and skirts in the spring 2010 collection. Kate Bosworth, fashionista extraordinaire, was spotted in these Celine summer sandals recently – in natural leather with multiple ties. As with Philo’s new aesthetic, they’re comfortable, clean and well designed. “It feels like a bit of calmness and cleanliness are what’s needed in fashion now,” the British Philo told the New York Times, a few months ago.“What we’re doing at Céline is crisper and more structured than at Chloé, but that’s very much about where my taste is now. We’ve kept everything quite clean and quite fluid, with a very simple color card. I’m very much into staple pieces, but with a twist — something that feels of the moment.” And as you can see, Kerry Washington and Blake Lively have been spotted in it, too. Last year was all about Balenciaga, Balmain and Givenchy. 2010 is the year of the return of Celine. And check out the spring leather bags – amazingly chic.

Lots of New York and European brands do constant events in Los Angeles, but Calvin Klein womenswear designer Francisco Costa and menswear designer Italo Zucchelli came to L.A. and had their rare fashion event. And they went cultural and unique, combining it with an art event last night, Thursday 1/28. It was partially in celebration of L.A. Arts Month and Art Los Angeles Contemporary, and there were art project collaborations with artworld names like Jean Shin, Neville Wakefield and Jennifer West. It was held in a new mult-level space on Melrose near LaCienega, and was an interesting merger of the art world and the fashion world – and of course, this being L.A. – the celebrity world. Of course, the big names like Penelope Cruz, Kate Bosworth, Ryan Phillippe, Jared Leto, Ginnifer Goodwin, Abbie Cornish, Michelle Monaghan, Greg Kinnear, Ali Larter, Melissa George, Molly Sims, Milla Jovovich, Kellan Lutz, Rosetta Getty, Rachel Griffiths, China Chow, Coco Rocha, Elise Crombez, Jordana Brewster, Jean Shin, Neville Wakefield, Monet Mazur, Peter Facinelli and Stavros Niarchos all wore Calvin Klein Collection. That’s a lot of work for the CK stafg! Not only that – Penelope Cruz did NOT wear black: stop the presses! Each of the women’s looks were designed by Mr. Costa, the Women’s Creative Director and each of the men’s looks were designed by Mr. Zucchelli, the Men’s Creative Director. This amount of fashion people, art people and celebrities mixing was icing on the cake, after the last few weeks of Globe parties, SAG parties, and designers descending on Los Angeles. And those Calvin Klein clothes sure work well in Los Angeles – those natural colored minimalistic designs are perfect for the L.A. light and weather.

The new L.A. Chloe boutique – one of the few new real European designer boutiques to open in our current state of economy – threw its doors open in a very quiet way a few weeks ago. Now they’re about to get louder. On Thursday, April 23, they’ll throw a big old-fashioned celeb hosted bust out – Kate Bosworth and Chloe Sevigny, two celebs known for their style, will co-host – at Milk Studios, on North Cahuenga. Chloe designer Hannah MacGibbon will fly into town with Chloe CEO and Chairman Ralph Toldedano, so the company is clearly looking for major press on this one. After all, MacGibbon has large shoes to fill – Chloe’s former designer Phoebe Phylo became a cult superstar.
Well, we can’t wait to see what the L.A. fashionistas pull out of their closets for this one!!
There are very few people who could bring Prince and Jennifer Lopez and Karl Lagerfeld and Vogue’s Anna Wintour together in the same room - but Donatella Versace is one of those people. The Fashion Group International – which has branches in New York and Los Angeles – had its 25th anniversary event in Thursday night in New York City – honoring Donatella Versace, who received her award from both Jennifer (in a pale violet satin one shoulder bombshell Versace dress) and Prince, a famed Versace wearer himself. Donatella also brought her daughter Allegra Versace, who is not often in the limelight, as she’s suffered from anorexia for years, and has been in treatment at UCLA here in L.A. for some time. Balthazar Getty also joined the group – while his estranged wife, Rosetta Getty, was at a cocktail party for Vanity Fair’s Michael Roberts in L.A. Thursday night. They weren’t the only names in attendance: Italian Vogue’s Franca Sozzani flew i, as did Ashley Olsen, Debra Messing, Blake Lively, Meryl Streep’s actress daughter Mamie Gummer, Isaac Mizrahi and Kate Bosworth.
On this side of the pond, we’ve been strutting around in our Manolo’s, Louboutin’s and Jimmy Choos. But in London, ladies like Amy Winehouse and Liberty Ross have become partial to the footwear of Jonathan Kelsey. Kelsey was a designer for Jimmy Choo for some time, and has now struck out on his own – and celebs who travel a lot, like Debra Messing, model Natalia Vodianova, and Kate Bosworth have picked up a few pair. Now we have a new shoe designer to crave – because Kelsey’s creations will now be available at Saks Fifth Avenue in Beverly Hills on Wilshire. And this Saturday, Oct 11, he’ll be there, meeting and greeting, from 2PM to 4PM. And it’s always nice to put a face to a shoe – and a name. Oh, and he has another big semi-English fan: Madonna.
