The fact that Jennifer Aniston got a perfume deal is not surprising. Fragrance companies have been pursuing her since “Friends.” But the fact that she did it is actually a little bit surprising. After all, it’s not like she needs the money. And she’s not that kind of exhibitionist actress, really. But more surprising – she did ads for her fragrance, “Lolavie,” topless that ran in London’s The Daily Mail – just as she was about to do her in-store for Harrod’s. And we have to say, she’s never looked better than in those ads. Of course, they are properly grainy and don’t really show anything. In fact, she’s almost showing more in her buff colored Valentino pre-fall dress at Harrod’s – short, tight, and practically nude colored. The shoes are by Azzedine – who makes the best shoes in the world, and the most expensive. And Ms. A has been wearing a lot of Valentino this year – clearly the new designers are fans of hers and she of them. We’ll be curious to sniff the scent when it gets to these shores – and we have no idea what “Lolavie” means, but it’s rather a strange name for a perfume that clearly wants to be commercial.

The annual Women in Film Crystal and Lucy Awards were handed out on Tuesday night at the Hyatt Regency in Century City, with Debra Messing hosting, Courteney Cox getting a tv achievement award, Zoe Saldana picking up MaxMara’s “Face of the Future” Award, and Hollywood ladies like Emily Blunt and Jennifer Aniston attending – along, of course with most of the major female directors and executives in Hollywood. It was an estrogen heavy room, let’s just say. And with almost no exceptions, the ladies ALL wore black. Was this a “who looks the thinnest?” contest. Jennifer Aniston showed up under the guise of a “surprise guest,” to celebrate with pal Courteney Cox (Aniston got a similar award last year), and they looked like a couple of hugging Sicilian widows in their ultra simple black cocktail frocks. Debra Messing’s had a tiny bit more detail, and Emily Blunt had the best black dress on of the evening – an Elie Saab wrapped Grecian and lace dress, with a great Grecian hairstyle. Someone cast her in a toga period piece please! (Or if “Rome” comes back to HBO). The only lady of major consequence who did NOT wear black was Zoe Saldana. She was dressed in white ruffles on a backless halter by MaxMara, who sponsored her Face of the Future Award. Looks to us like she’s very much a face of the present already – and she usually is the best dressed lady wherever she shows up these days. Smart to wear white, in a sea of black. Of course, you have to look like her to pull it off.

Funny – we get so sick of seeing Jennifer Aniston in the same old black dress, and we hear from everyone in the world that they’re bored by her blonde-in-black steady look. So she shows up to the Paris premiere of “The Bounty Hunter” (a movie not making a box office bounty in its two weeks open in the U.S.) in a strapless Christian Lacroix Haute Couture gown with amazing draping, shape and style – a REAL Paris fashion moment on an American movie star.
The websites like Stylist.com, E! News and others are trashing it!

Stylist.com called it a prom dress “gone bad … We’re just not that into it, Jen.”

One E! News fashion critic wrote that “as much as we think mixing it up is better than playing it safe, sometimes taking a risk can go awry and, well, this one did.”

“To pull off a Lacroix gown, you need tons of attitude, otherwise the dress wears you rather than you wearing the dress, which is precisely what’s happening in this case,” according to uk.stylelist.com.

We UTTERLY disagree – we think this dress is STUNNING and it’s stunning on HER. Let’s applaud Jen’s fashion risk, because we’re always complaining that she DOESN’T take enough fashion risks! Fashionrules.com LOVES this dress, the color, and Jen in it. – Merle Ginsberg

Women in Film, the organization of power women in the film and tv industry, created the Crytsal and Lucy Awards years ago, and since then, major women like Jodie Foster, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Lopez, Holly Hunter and Jennifer Aniston have all been honored at the early summer awards ceremony, that last June, took place at the Century Plaza Hotel and was hosted, very humourously, by Chelsea Handler. This year’s awards ceremony was just announced today for June 1 – but no recipients were named yet. There are always major female tv and movie stars taking home statues and making great speaches – as well as female producers, screenwriters, directors, etc. And for many years, MaxMara has sponsored a career “transition” award (last year won by Elizabeth Banks), and very often, a lot of the awards recipients do wear MaxMara looks and Mrs. Maramotti, the public “face” of the brand (her husband’s family started it), comes into town and gives a number of private chic dinners. In any case, it’s an interesting moment for Hollywood ladies to shake off their black suits and get into summer cocktail gear and nude colored Louboutins for the evening – to show off to other women! It makes a difference in how they look WHOM they are dressing for! No mini-skirts at this affair!

Tonight’s (March 16) taping of David Letterman is complete on the East Coast, and both Jennifer Aniston and Gerard Butler showed up – separately – promoting “The Bounty Hunter.” Aniston did not suddenly change her all-black color scheme – she wore a chic black A line coat, over the knee, and no stockings with her sandals (NY in March? yikes) to the taping at Letterman’s Broadway and 53rd St. Studio, and then a simple black dress on the show. This woman is SO all about her hair, skin, body and face – she’s a fashion minimalist, and it’s a brave move – but it shows she’s got a good grip on who she is, and that it’s more about HER than the clothes she wears. It sure does not make her less popular with her many fans. And the black clothes make the multi-colored honey strands in her hair really stand out. Let’s see how “The Bounty Hunter” opens against “Alice in Wonderland” this weekend. We have no doubt that “Alice” will probably get a best costume Oscar for costume designer Colleen Atwood next year – the looks for all the characters were just extraordinary.

And we mean “good” in the fashion sense of the word – whether they’re a couple or not, well – we’re a little skeptical. After all, there’s box office receipts at stake here, so why wouldn’t they play up a flirtation rumor? But he’s in brand new Gucci, and he cleans up real well – as we saw at the Oscars this past weekend. The man knows how to wear a suit. Notice how the grey metallic of his Gucci works well with her very short metallic mini and black conservative jacket. The mini makes the jacket a LOT less conservative. Those are Jimmy Choo sandals propping her up, or Gerard would be towering over her. And of course, “The Bounty Hunter” opens this weekend.

It’s not like Jennifer Aniston’s never been on a magazine cover. But getting the cover of Architectural Digest (for March) is a whole other deal. And it might be the first of thousands of magazine covers in her life that does NOT refer to her love life. Her Beverly Hills home, not her hair or figure, is on prominent display – and it’s certainly a coup for the mag, because Aniston has been the top selling celebrity of any magazine cover for many years. The house was overhauled for two and a half years, with designer Stephen Shadley, who also has collaborated with Diane Keaton and Woody Allen. Her master bedroom features a wool-and-silk shag carpet, and a platform bed with a TV at the foot. Aniston, 40,describes the Zen-influenced home — whose palette was drawn from Brazilian cumaru (teak) — (more…)

The September issues of Elle, Vogue, Glamour, W, Marie Claire and Harper’s Bazaar are absolutely vital – the biggest issues of the year, advertising-wise (they have looked like phonebooks in the past – this Sept is rather doubtful), and they are the widest read issues, being back to school and all. Vogue even has a documentary movie coming out soon, called, aply, “The September Issue” – it just debuted at the Sydney Film Festival in Australia.

Well, we have scoopage – Jennifer Aniston is shooting the September cover of Elle Magazine this week in L.A. She’s been a best selling cover model for mags for many years, and clearly, it has not come to a stop yet. The well-tressed Ms. Aniston has ten new movies listed on her IMDB.com page, including three that have been completed: “Brand New Day,” with Aaron Eckhart as a self-help guru, “The Baster,” a romantic comedy with Jason Bateman about a 40 year old woman trying to get pregnant, and “Bounty Hunter,” an action drama with Gerard Butler.

Looks like Jen got the men of her dreams and the movies of her dreams – so to hell with what the tabloids write about her life!

Demi Moore

We’ve already reported that the Ferragamo boutique on Rodeo will have Debi Mazar and Adrian Grenier hosting an event on Tuesday June 2 for their menswear designer, who is coming in from Italy, to benefit victims of the Italian earthquake that occurred near Rome.. But here’s some other goings-on surrounding the event: Gwyneth Paltrow, Lucy Liu, Madonna, Marisa Tomei, Demi Moore, Jennifer Aniston, Eva Longoria, Dita von Teese and Ms. Mazar are each signing and donating a Ferragamo bag of their own to be auctioned off internationally through GlobalGiving’s site on Ebay (ebay.com). All proceeds will directly benefit the victims of the L’Aquila earthquakel. A few of these bags are also stars in their own right: Jen Aniston’s bag is Ferragamo’s Eco-Friendly bag and was featured in Vogue. Eva Mendes’ and Demi’s bags have been photographed with their owners. Deb Mazar’s bag was handpainted by artist Kenny Scharf. Lucy Liu’s comes with a note that says, “from my closet to yours.” Demi is carrying her SF bag in this photo. You can go to ebay and check them all out.

The New York Times reported this last weekend that we are now living in the “New Age of NICE.” So these days, designer handbags are all about charity. Let’s hope it lasts. On Wednesday, PS Arts charity hosted its “Bag Lunch” at Juicy Couture’s Pam Levy’s home – and donated an enormous amount of money to arts and the public schools through the sales of designer handbags. We love that.
