Donovan Leitch – son of folk legend Donovan and husband of supermodel Kirsti Hume – and singer for bands Nancy Boy and Camp Freddy – is unveling a new rock musical the weekend of June 6 and 7 at Largo, 366 N. LaCienega, near Melrose.
It’s called “The Dark Root of the Dream,” and it’s a bit glam rock, a bit literary, and very theatrical – it’s the story of a fictional son of the poet Virginia Woolf, who becomes a rock star, if Oscar Wilde were a rock star. The music is what Leitch is calling “Gypsy Glam,” and he’s backed up by something called the FIshtank Ensemble, a “cross-pollinated group of gypsy musicians.” Donovan Leitch will appear on KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic on Thursday June 4 to talk about the production and preview musical selections. We expect some fashion folk might show up, friends of Kirsti’s and Donovan’s, and that it will be a cool scene. You can call to 310 855 0330 to purchase tickets.– Merle Ginsberg
Economic crunch? WHAT economic crunch? The retail stores just keep opening in L.A., spreading like the wild fires in Malibu . . . this one IS in Malibu, which is becoming a little retail hub (Missoni’s opening there soon) – making it possible for residents of The Bu not to have to leave to shop. Damn, they can probably just surf right into their favorite stores.
John Varvatos, the great men’s designer, is opening a Malibu store this weekend on October 4, in the Malibu Country Mart on Cross Creek Road. And if you’re feeling a bit like taking a ride up the PCH this weekend, there will be a charity benefit concert which starts at 4pm on Saturday (to benefit the Malibu Legacy Park Project), with Donovan Leitch, Dave Navarro, Billy Morrison from The Cult, and members of Guns n’ Roses and Jane’s Addiction will also play with them.
So, even though we doubt too many Malibu men wear those beautiful John Varvatos well-cut suits – although holiday season is coming – they will also be carrying jeans, t shirts, sneakers, jackets – the works.
