Madonna with bangs

Madonna is wearing them! The Material Girl has kept her hair the virtually the same way – blonde, parted on the side, and wavy – for years. Now, all of a sudden, she’s sporting a thick fringe, on the London arm of her “Sticky and Sweet” tour – dressed, not surprisingly, in that eighties way Cameron Diaz was sporting in the new V Magazine – imitating Madonna! We like that Madonna doesn’t vary her look that much. It’s just going to be tough and filled with leather and boots and fishnets – it really goes full circle, to where she started out.
Anyway, if Madonna’s wearing thick bangs, who’s next? Giselle? – Merle Ginsberg

Cam Diaz in V Magazine

The eighties are back in fashion this fall – for about the umpteenth time since they went away! But that’s okay, we love them anyway – as long as we don’t have to live in them again. But a little shoulder pad action and a tight skirt can never be a bad thing – right?

One of our favorite eighties fashion moments was Madonna in her “True Blue” persona – cropped platinum hair, deep red lips, and her Gaultier cone bra and high boots. Well, when you see the new issue of V Magazine this week, you’ll do a double take when you see the cover – of Cameron Diaz – and inside spread. Photographers Mert & Marcus (Louis Vuitton ads) shot Ms. Diaz a la Madonna in her “True Blue” moment – with tattoos (painted on on the set), in Prada shorts and boots, and a cone bra made by a stylist in London – from gaffer tape. Kids, don’t try this at home – unless you’re stylist Jen Rade.

We gotta say, Cameron’s done a lot of covers recently, always in her sunny smiley California girl mode, but we REALLY like her tough Madonna look – her body is her best feature, and this spread really features that. We know we’ve been talking a lot about V Magazine lately, but they’ve got some great visuals you might not see otherwise, www.vmagazine.com. W Magazine had Ginnifer Goodwin going eighties – V has Cameron Diaz. What does this tell you?

Cameron Diaz

She wore a pretty white dress with a red belt, and didn’t look like she fell out of bed – that’s something for Cameron Diaz.

This was to her star-getting ceremony to the Hollywood Walk of Fame today, which had big name friends Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes and Lucy Liu there. We are looking forward to seeing Cameron’s new movie, “My Sister’s Keeper” – it looks fairly wholesome, and has more emotion than her usual rom coms.

BUT – what’s up with this makeup? Red lips, black eyeliner, smudged blush? Is this the best look for a sunny day? It might have been intended for on camera, but this is what the camera saw.

We always thought that Cameron Diaz was the L.A. girl who always wore the shortest skirts – but now we found a woman older than her who out-shorted her: check out Daryl Hannah’s skirt length (reminds us of the old joke: “that’s not a skirt – that’s a BELT!”) at a screening that Stella McCartney hosted at her Beverly Blvd screening Friday night. Stella showed “Home,” an environmentally oriented film, and drew the likes of Anjelica Huston, Charlize Theron, and Liv Tyler, all wearing Stella outfits, of course. We like Cameron’s SMc black and white dress a lot – but Daryl’s outfit is two sizes too small. And that is not environmentally correct. – MG

Fashion stylist Rachel Zoe

When Rachel Zoe was a creative consultant to Halston, at the time Harvey Weinstein was re-inventing the great line from the seventies, it was assumed she would soon launch her own collection. Instead, she did “The Rachel Zoe Project” tv reality show with Bravo, and is now shooting season two – as well as continuing to style Kate Hudson, Anne Hathaway, Cameron Diaz and Jennifer Garner. Now she’s telling reporters she is about to create a line of clothes for stores for 2010 – BUT – instead of it being pricey gowns and long hippie dresses like the ones she wears – she intends it to be – low priced!

It will include jewelry, perfume, and bags – no shoes yet, but we expect them. But HOW low priced can Rachel Zoe go?

If it’s going to Target, we don’t believe she’d wear it herself.

Scary Looks IFP

Here at Fashion Rules, we try to behave – we really do. We try to show you the all the best looks making their way around town, down red carpets and runways. But sometimes, we just HAVE to be bad, and show you the wacky choices celebrities are capable of making. And it’s all the more interesting, because these women have EVERY option and can have the greatest clothes in the world delivered to their front doors – in Malibu and in town.

Cameron Diaz, who has not been very present in the media lately, chose to show up at the IFP’s in what looked like a dress reminiscent of Christmas wrapping paper – red and black giant stripes. Not only did it look like it was meant for a picnic table down in Santa Monica, where the event was held, it also breaks EVERY rule of what not to wear: horizontal stripes, a full skirt in horizontal stripes, etc. And of course, not wearing it with dirty hair would be a good idea, too. We hear even her longtime stylist Rachel Zoe can’t tell Cameron what to wear. Then why is Cameron paying her?

Teri Hatcher’s hot mess can’t be blamed on a stylist, either. She showed up at the IFP Awards in a lovely black Monique L’hullier cocktail dress with little side cut outs – very chic, very New York runway looking. However, Hatcher did a pole dance song and dance number to introduce one of the nominated movies, and made a huge fool of herself in front of major industry people. If she had any hopes of getting cast in an indie movie (she probably doesn’t realize Marisa Tomei already played that part), she can forget it, now. Then she insisted on wearing leggings running around at the after party, in case anyone wanted to be reminded of how horrifying her stripper number was. All we have to say is: HELP!

We’ve all heard rumors that Soho House from London (and New York) would be taking up permanent residence in Los Angeles, probably in the old Mortons restaurant on Melrose and Robertson, where they’ve held several awards week events in the past. But last year, they held several Oscar-week private parties with Grey Goose vodka at the very tippy top of 9200 Sunset near Doheny, a space with an incredible view of the whole city and Cameron Diaz and Drew Barrymore turned up. Now word comes that they will eventually land permanently at 9200 Sunset, although this year, it will again be temporary parties.

However, the British owners of Soho House HAVE, in fact, taken up one permanent residence in L.A. – they are open to crack open Cecconi’s restaurant, an Italian bistro from London (famous for lobster risotto and Bellini’s) on the site of Mortons – very exciting! If you want to see a Brit in LA, this will be the place to go. And it kicks off in high style, when Tamara Mellon, the glam British owner of Jimmy Choo, hosts a pre-Oscar lunch there on Friday Feb. 20th. You can bet the footwear in that room will be fine – and we’re excited that L.A.’s going to get a fun new restaurant at Melrose and Robertson. – Merle Ginsberg

If you go to Style.com, you can see they did a feature today on Vogue.com’s TOP TEN AT THE GOLDEN GLOBES (http://www.style.com/vogue/bestdressed/011309/).

Well, we here at Fashion Rules have gotta say: NO WAY! This was the order of Vogue.com’s list, and we’ll give you FR’s talking points along the way:

1. Renee Zellwegger in Carolina Herrera  ARE YOU KIDDING US??? The hair, the dress – it was so OLD SCHOOL. And it wasn’t flattering at all. We love Mrs. Herrera, we love Renee – but not in THAT LOOK!! It made most site’s WORST look lists.

2. Marisa Tomei in Oscar de la Renta: okay, it was lovely. But it was a bit conservative and safe – even if it WAS chic. New York society LOVES its designers, doesn’t it?

3. Kate Winslet in YSL: Okay, we agree with this one.

4. Maggie Gyllenhaal in Lanvin: We agree here, too.

5. Blake Lively in Nina Ricci: VOGUE – WAKE UP!! THE DRESS DIDN’T FIT!!! And it was BOR-ING!!!

6. Amy Adams in Oscar de la Renta: Okay – that was chic.

7. Anne Hathaway in Armani Prive: should have been higher up the list – it was a beaut.

8. Elizabeth Banks in J. Mendel: We love J Mendel, too – but we liked Kate Beckinsale’s white J. Mendel a whole lot more than this peachy tight dress matched with the wrong necklace, and bad hair.

9. Cameron Diaz in Chanel Haute Couture: pretty dress. Too bad she’s got four inches of roots in her hair.

10. Salma Hayek in Bottega Veneta: She looked just GREAT.

Who is this girl? A third rate country star? Cameron Diaz at the Oscars a few years ago? A Russian vacationing in St. Tropez? We just can’t BELIEVE Kate Hudson chose to wear this Gucci spring caftan to the People’s Choice Awards – and with deep navy blue eye-shadow, on top of it. It even made HER look fat and bloated – and she’s got a great bod! Why would she hide it? In the past, we’ve liked her hippie chic looks – but this is going WAY too far. Gucci had a lot more fitted dresses in the spring collection that would have been MUCH more flattering. – Merle Ginsberg
