We read a story in the New York Times Style section yesterday (January 15th) about the economic woes in Paris, and what the French intellectuals think about the decline in sales of luxury goods. Essentially, they are thrilled, because they feel like luxury goods caused generalized greed, competition and a decline in morality and family values.

There’s an argument to be made for that, sure. And it is pleasant and something of a relief to see less visible signs of status on the streets, in that there’s less to keep up with, if one cares about such things, whether in Paris or Los Angeles or New York. And it’s nice to see that people are talking about more interesting things than just the next “It Bag.”

BUT – what about women who just love beautiful bags because they just love beautiful bags? Isn’t that okay? And if one bought just ONE handbag a season, in a way – isn’t that better than buying several less expensive ones, and loving them less?

All we can say is – we spotted this new Prada spring bag on Saks.com (it’s on pre-order – and there is a large demand for them, too, so if you want it – you better get on it) and – well, it was love at first sight. Or site. It’s called the Tessuto & Pitone Pietre Messenger bag, and it has texture, great shape, the perfect size, a shoulder strap (they’re back, for ease, and better for your posture) – and it’s not trendy, and doesn’t scream “BRAND.” It has no identifiable logo on it anywhere.

AND -  nobody’s telling you “YOU HAVE TO HAVE IT.”

But if you WANT it, better order it now. – Merle Ginsberg
