The MOCA thirtieth anniversary gala held this weekend at the L.A. based museum not only raised $4 million for the financially ailing art institution – with gallerist Larry Gagosian ponying up half a million dollars at auction for the pink Damien Hirst piano that Lady Gaga played (with the Bolshoi Ballet dancing)- it had a wide spectrum of fashion, from gowns to corsets to cocktail to mini’s. It just shows you that anything goes with creative black tie these days. If you’re Kate Bosworth, you can wear a tiny print Proenza Schoulder mini dress. Chloe Sevigny wore a white Miu Miu embellished mini. Jessica Alba wore a more demure black cocktail dress, thatwas actually knee-length – but paired it with red shoes. Eva Mendes was somewhat demure as well, in a black and tan kneelength Miu Miu cocktail dress. Why so much Miu Miu? Well, Miuccia Prada was in the house – having held her own Prada book party on Friday night. And she’s a known lover of art. But our favorite MOCA looks were worn by Kate Beckinsale and Gwen Stefani. While Marisa Tomei wore a screaming pink vintage Jean Desses gown and Rose McGowan a strapless red gown – we think color’s great, as long as it whispers more than screams. And if you’re going to do black, do black and white, if you want to stand out. Beckinsale often wears one shoulder or strapless gowns close to the body – and she stayed with her silhouette, this time a teal pleated and ruched Andrew Gn gown that was VERY flattering on her, and got attention without turning up the fashion volume too high. Gwen Stefani paired an awesome Dolce black and white camisole with her own LAMB black pants and shoes, super cool – a combo of high fashion and street. Carey Mulligan of “An Education” also showed her fashion education, in a short silver encrusted Prada dress and just her very short rust-colored red hair. Her gamine chic style is in such contrast with Hollywood va va voom that it’s utterly refreshing.
