According to today’s L.A. Times, Patrick Goldstein’s column, Ricky Gervais has been signed to host The Golden Globe Awards on January 17th 2010 on NBC. This is a very big deal for the Globes, as Gervais is an international comic star, and he’ll bring some interesting British smart-ass humor to the affair. He’s also a star of movies – which may not be huge box office commodities – but they’re still being made. And The Golden Globes haven’t had a host since 1995. This can’t help but boost the ratings.
The L.A. Times did the unthinkable – Goldstein called the Motion Picture Academy’s president Tom Sherak (that being the Academy as in “Academy Awards,” or the Oscars) and asked him what he thought of the Globe’ getting such a great host. Of course, Sherak said it was a great idea. But Goldstein makes it clear that this year’s Oscars has no host right now. Apparently, Hugh Jackman doesn’t want to come back for a second run, and the Oscar telecast has new producers this year, who apparently going after a team of hosts, like Steve Martin and Tina Fey. Or Alec Baldwin or TIna Fey. We say, why not just Tina Fey? She could be styled by Andrea Lieberman or Jen Rade, wear fabulous gowns, and make everyone laugh till they cried. NOW it’s a horse race, as they say. It may well be true that the Globes will turn out to be the more glamourous affair this year. Designers, start your engines. – Merle Ginsberg
