Issey Miyake launched his namesake iconic scent L’Eau d’Issey seventeen years ago, and the watery unique fragrance by the Japanese designer was so green and fresh and new, it created its own category: green floral.
Now, for the first time in seventeen years, Issey Miyake, he of the pleated chiffon dresses that are so watery, too, has created a new scent, called, appropriately, A Scent by Issey Miyake. Ascent? A scent? All the meanings are implied, and present, and for the wearer to interpret themselves.
First of all, the bottle is a piece of art: looking like an old apothecary bottle: it’s a slab of pure pale green glass by designer Arik Levy, who’s created light fixtures for Baccarat.. A Scent’s bottle looks a bit primitive, but also modern. The side of the bottle is frosted glass, and in the various three sizes – 50, 100 or 150 ml sizes – only the thickness of the glass at the sides expands. Very clever. Very well designed. Very Japanese!
The idea and philosophy behind A Scent – and you know Issey has a few – ideas and philosophies – is “a scent as simple and beautiful as the air we breathe.” It attempts to merge technology with nature and poetry. Issey believes “nature is the greatest perfumer of life.” We agree! The key to the scent is leaves and flowers, fresh nots of hyacinth and galbanum, with verbena and a hint of jasmine. It’s fresh and unusual – but also smells like the night air in L.A.
BUT – you can’t buy it NOW! On August 15th, it will be sold at Saks and Neimans for a sixty day exclusive. On October 15th, it will go to Bloomingdales and Nordstrom. It will have eau de toilette sprays in three sizes ($65 to $115), and a body lotion and shower gel.
We think it’s well worth waiting for!
