Everybody in Hollywood’s talking about Heath Ledger’s performance in “The Dark Knight” – his co-stars Christian Bale and Gary Oldman, and director Christopher Nolan have gone so far as to say he might win an Oscar. But we’re fixated with another aspect of the film, which opens Friday July18: Maggie Gyllenhaal’s wardrobe. As tough assistant D.A. Rachel Dawes – girlfriend of Aaron Eckhart’s Harvey Dent/Two Face and ex gf of Batman, she’s got two faces, too: a working woman AND a glamour girl. Costume designer Lindy Hemming (“Batman Begins,” “Harry Potter,” “Lara Croft,” “Casino Royal,” “Four Weddings and a Funeral’) has a history of making women in action movies look great – and Gyllenhaal’s wardrobe has both chic daytime looks that are expertly tailored – black trousers, a sharply cut vest and a white shirt, a chic camel blouse – and sexy soft evening looks – a midnight chiffon cap sleeved dress with a beaded capelet vest over it, and a rust colored dress. Hemming brings out Gyllenhaal’s no-nonsense work side, and her evening glam chic side – in other words, making her a real woman in the real world – even though she’s in a fantasy world! There isn’t much fashion in summer movies, “Sex and the City” being the exception – so keep your eyes peeled for the detals of Gyllenhaal’s looks.
